Position Overview

Kiewit is expanding its design team specializing in Hydropower, Dams and Hydraulic Structures (HDH) and is seeking top performing contributors to support and sustain its growth. As such, we are currently seeking a Senior Structural Engineer specializing in Hydropower, Dams and Hydraulic Structures (HDH). The candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team that includes civil, mechanical, hydraulic, geotechnical and electrical engineers, as well as estimators, schedulers and other construction professionals to provide various services to internal groups for the development of HDH projects.

 

Responsibilities will include leading and/or carrying out preliminary and detailed structural design efforts on HDH pursuits and projects, supporting engineering integration, managing design, providing technical mentorship to team members, and contributing to construction estimating, scheduling, and planning efforts. The successful candidate will contribute with their energy, enthusiasm, collaborative approach, and leadership to achieve the quality and safety objectives of the projects to which they are assigned.

Location

This position will be based out of one of Kiewit’s offices in Canada - Laval, QC, or Oakville, ON, with occasional travel as business necessitates to project sites and other offices (up to 15%). Other Kiewit offices may be considered based on the candidate's experience. Position could qualify for flexible remote work based on the candidate experience.

Responsibilities

In collaboration with the HDH Structural Discipline Lead:

  • Act as a senior structural engineer/reviewer as part of the HDH structural design team on pursuits and projects, including:
    • Perform, review, and oversee structural calculations and designs.
    • Ensure accuracy of design deliverables (reports, drawings & specifications, etc.)
    • Act as Engineer of Record/engineering integrator on selected scope items/projects.
    • Unique to the Kiewit model: coordinate and act as a facilitator of collaboration with construction teams during the design phase. Take advantage of access to the construction team to achieve a design that is truly optimal for construction.
    • Take a leadership role in implementing the design quality management plan. 
    • Help identify design risks and assist with risk mitigation planning.
    • Support project coordination and management of selected HDH engineering projects.
  • Mentor and lead engineers in their technical development.
  • Contribute to HDH technical proposals with scope definition, specification development, structural sketches, drawings and detailed designs.
  • Support the development of the HDH engineering team by building internal tools and processes
     

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent. A master’s degree or PhD is an asset.
  • 15+ years’ experience in structural engineering design for dams, hydropower, and hydraulic structures projects 
  • Hydraulic structures-focused experience including: stability analyses, structural design of new hydraulic structures (concrete dams, hydropower stations, spillways, sluiceways, weirs, locks, levies, etc.), design of stability improvements to existing structures, condition assessment of existing hydraulic structures, structural design of repairs/refurbishments to existing hydraulic structures, dam safety assessments, etc.
  • Experience with project delivery models that include working directly with the contractor is an asset (one or several of early Contractor Involvement, Design-Build, Progressive Design-Build, etc.)
  • Membership in the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or affiliation to another Canadian professional organization is an advantage. Holding a license in the United States is also an advantageous asset.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, along with strong problem-solving and organizational abilities
