Position Overview

We are adding a Safety Manager to our Kiewit Building Group in the Northern Virginia/DC/Maryland area to support projects in the Vertical Construction Market on the East coast.  We hire people passionate about safety to implement and oversee our comprehensive safety program to reinforce our commitment that "nobody gets hurt". Working closely with project teams, Safety Managers implement protocols, conduct training programs, and monitor compliance with regulations, client requirements and company policies. Our Safety Managers are based at the construction projects, to provide field oversight and ensure safety for staff and craft employees, subcontractors, trade partners and consultants supporting the project.

District Overview

Kiewit Building Group specializes in constructing office buildings, industrial complexes, education and sports facilities, hotels, hospitals, transportation terminals, science and technology facilities, manufacturing, retail and special use facilities and extensive interior construction with tenant improvements. Its capabilities include general construction, construction management, design build, design-assist and turn-key project development. Kiewit also provides fast, accurate preconstruction project management services. During the past 10 years, Kiewit has performed construction services for more than 1,100 vertical construction projects, totaling $7.5 billion in revenue.

Location

This role will be based out of our Springfield, VA regional office. Projects and assignment can span across the Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia region.   

Responsibilities

Safety Planning and Implementation:
•    Develop and implement comprehensive safety plans and procedures specific to vertical commercial and federal facility projects.
•    Ensure that safety protocols are aligned with regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and Kiewit's safety standards.
•    Conduct regular site inspections to identify potential hazards and assess safety risks.


Training and Education:
•    Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees and subcontractors.
•    Provide guidance on safety-related certifications and qualifications required for specific job roles.
•    Promote a culture of safety awareness and accountability across all levels of the organization.


Incident Management and Investigation:
•    Lead investigations into safety incidents, near misses, and accidents.
•    Analyze root causes of incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
•    Ensure timely reporting of all safety incidents in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.


Regulatory Compliance:
•    Stay informed about changes in safety regulations and standards applicable to building construction and all MEP scopes. 
•    Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies.
•    Coordinate with regulatory authorities during inspections and audits.


Safety Performance Monitoring:
•    Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure safety performance on projects.
•    Conduct regular assessments and audits to evaluate adherence to safety standards and identify areas for improvement.
•    Provide timely and accurate safety reports to project management and senior leadership.

Qualifications

•    Bachelors degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field plus 5 years experience in EHS/construction safety management or if no degree, minimum of 9 years exerience in construction safety management, performing functions as outlined above.  Prefer experience with Vertical and Federal Projects and experience in Safety leadership roles as the General Contractor.
•    Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of a safety program on projects of increasing complexity, communicating effectively to all levels of stakeholders and workers.
•    Professional certification in safety management (e.g., CSP, CHST, EM385) preferred.
•    CPR/First Aid, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and OSHA/MSHA instructor certifications are preferred. 
•    In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and other relevant safety standards.
•    Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Base Compensation: $139,000/yr - $157,000/yr

(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
