District Overview

Kiewit Power Engineers brings various project types to life across North America, including gas-fired generation, power delivery, environmental retrofits, renewables and new technology, and water/wastewater. Our staff leads the power markets engineering process and collaborates with Kiewit's construction teams to focus on safe, cost-effective and innovative designs that achieve client expectations and further Kiewit's legacy of excellence. 

Location

This position is located in the Raleigh NC Metro area, with flexible work options to work hybrid from home and/or the office.  Occasional travel to our district office in Lenexa Kansas will be required.

 

Responsibilities

  • Draft sketches, piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), plans, sections and details, drawings, equipment layout, and design/model in 3D for power plant systems which could include:  steam cycle systems, boiler feed and condensate, water treatment, fuel handling, hydraulic, heat transfer systems, conveying systems, rotating equipment (generators) systems, and Balance of plant systems (compressed air and gas systems, service water, HVAC).  Designs include equipment layout and complete mechanical systems, including checking interferences and constructability.
  • Check design deliverables in accordance with industry codes and standards, contract requirements, and company standards.
  • Adhere to schedules and work assignments to ensure successful project completion.
  • Coordinate with other drafters, designers and other team members assigned to a project or task, and support work progress and results.
  • Train and advise interns or new graduates
  • Require little to no supervision required to apply standard correctly to design.
  • Seek feedback and use it effectively.  Works efficiently as an individual contributor as well as part of a larger design team.
  • Identify changes in the scope of work during a small project and produces design changes as needed to stay within budget and schedule. 
  • Take the initiative to meet or exceed the quality and expected outcome requirements of internal and external customers. 
  • Complete miscellaneous tasks to support project development.
  • Participate in project meetings as required.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years’ experience in Design and/or Drafting disciplines with a background in Piping and/or mechanical equipment and systems design in a 3D modeling environment in the Power generation market is required.  
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting/Design or engineering preferred; minimum Highschool or GED Diploma 
  • Experience utilizing 3D programs such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, SmartPlant3D, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Autodesk, Open Plant or similar programs as well as knowledge and experience using latest computer operating systems and office software.  Able to utilize software to check for interferences and constructability in designs.  
  • Must have experience conceptualizing designs/models in a 2D/3D environment designing similar mechanical systems and equipment as outlined above.  Experience designing and modeling piping and equipment layouts in the Power market (power generation – thermal, hydroelectric, wind/solar, geothermal) highly desired but will consider candidates with strong mechanical design skills in other Industrial processing markets, or Oil and Gas/Chemical plants.  Experience creating P&ID's, plot plans and drawings for construction packages.  
  • Ability to work in a growing, adaptive and multi-disciplined team environment
  • Ability to work independently with limited direction and oversight
