Position Overview

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineers (KIE) has an immediate opening for a dynamic Design Engineering Director / Area Manager for our growing Design Management group in the Southeast. You will be part of our growing infrastructure engineering group, which includes structural, geotechnical, civil, drainage, roadway, rail, maritime and materials disciplines, and is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on the design-build delivery of infrastructure projects. You will be a primary engineering point of contact for our Southeast construction district, establishing key relationships with the teams that build the work we design. Candidate must have a strong presence in the Southeast region, particularly in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida.

 

As a Design Engineering Director, you will facilitate relationships with the engineering divisions of clients and partners throughout the Southeast region.  You will manage design on design-build infrastructure programs, pursuits, and projects. Design-Build infrastructure projects include infrastructure, transportation, transit, bridge, hydro-electric, maritime, and water/water resources projects. You will provide mentoring and oversight to Design Managers, who are responsible for administering, assisting, and managing design to meet project, quality, financial, schedule, and construction objectives, consistent with Kiewit's Standard Operating Procedures.  On particularly large, complex or risky projects, you will serve as Design Manager, responsible for the day-to-day leadership and execution of the project, ensuring all project objectives are achieved.

KIE 's Design Management team is driving clients to turn to Kiewit during all stages of design-build projects to manage their multi-disciplined design teams to improve schedule, control costs and minimize risk. Our construction-focused engineers analyze root causes and resolve design issues before they impact schedule and budget. Location

This position is based out of either our Peachtree, GA, Raleigh, NC or Tampa, FL locations with a combination of travel throughout the region. 

Responsibilities

Pre-award work: 

  • Manage staff and activities for a project of significant size and complexity and develop staffing plans and schedules to meet the delivery schedule and task requirements. 
  • Lead and manage a team of Kiewit design engineers, estimators and subconsultants making up the pursuit team, and ensure they are prepared to execute and deliver pre-award work.
  • Work closely with Business Development team to leverage existing relationships with sub-consultants and owners to facilitate positioning of Kiewit to win. 
  • Present ideas in persuasive and compelling ways; gain support and buy-in without demanding it; influences others to desired course of action. 
  • Participate in development and negotiation of teaming agreements between subconsultants ensuring that Kiewit protocols and standards for commercial and risk terms are achieved. 
  • Prior to shortlisting, assist with preparation and review of SOQs. 
  • Facilitate work planning activities, oversee pre-award level of effort and fee development, quality management, and risk/change management. 
  • Ensure that project controls measures are implemented. Conduct periodic project reviews to oversee and facilitate successful project delivery performance. 
  • Lead transition from pre-award to post-award work planning and resource scheduling. 

Post-award work:

  • Lead and manage a team of Kiewit design engineers and subconsultants, and ensure they are prepared to execute and deliver. 
  • Manage the design team to ensure the scope is met while producing quality deliverables within the required schedule, managing risk/change, and the project budget while balancing impacts for the overall success of Kiewit. 
  • Plan, direct and supervise the activities of assigned personnel and provide and enforce proper delegation of management authority, responsibility and accountability.   
  • Ensure that the project team complies with the contract agreement as well as exercises rigid cost/schedule control to implement the approved design. 
  • Lead integration of risk/change management processes. 
  • Develop action plans with timelines in order to implement strategy; involve others in the process, incorporating best ideas into the plan and gaining buy-in through effective communication. 
  • Interface and maintain relationships with the Owner, other Kiewit operating districts and design partners. 
  • Bring a “best practice” mindset with an eye to constant improvement and quality in delivery of work product. 
  • Mentoring and developing technical capabilities of mid-level and junior staff. 
     

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or greater in Civil Engineering with a focus on transportation. 
  • U.S. Professional Engineer license is required with ability to obtain in other states as needed.
  • 15 yrs of directly related experience with at least five of these years in a Design Manager position with project management responsibility on large complex multidisciplinary projects. 
  • Successful completion of management role in delivery of one or more projects in excess of $500 million in construction value with a minimum of three or more in excess of $250 million.  
  • 10 yrs of specific experience in delivery of design-build and/or P3 projects as a Design Manager, Segment Lead or Discipline Lead with experience in both pre- and post-award phases.
  • 5 or more years of managing an engineering and design team.
  • 5 years of experience negotiating upstream and downstream engineering services agreements for alternative delivery projects.
  • Ability to travel regionally to support local clients and projects as business necessitates. #LI-MD1
