Position Overview

Kiewit is expanding its new design team specializing in Hydropower, Dams and Hydraulic Structures (HDH) and is seeking top performing contributors to support and sustain its growth over the coming years.

As such, we are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer to support the activities of the group (e.g. proposals, ECI mandates, greenfield projects, refurbishments, etc.).

The candidate will work closely with the team’s Engineers and Designers to provide various services to internal groups for the development of HDH projects.

Location

This position will be based out of one of Kiewit's major hub locations across Canada (Laval, QC; Oakville, ON; Burnaby, BC) with travel as business necessitates to project sites and other offices.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the HDH Mechanical Discipline Lead and Mechanical Engineers: 
•    Support the design and layout of mechanical equipment and systems for new and existing hydropower facilities, including:
    o    Hydromechanical equipment (gates, stoplogs, trashracks) and embedded parts.
    o    Heavy mechanical equipment including cranes and hoists.
    o    Turbine generator equipment and auxiliaries.
    o    Balance of plant systems including piping and HVAC.
•    Prepare designs and drawings in 2D and 3D environments such as AutoCAD, CADWorx, Revit, etc.
•    Prepare design deliverables (engineering drawings, P&ID’s, quantity take-offs, etc.) in accordance with industry standards, internal Kiewit standards and client standards.
•    Work closely with other disciplines (civil/structural, hydrotechnical, electrical, I&C, etc.) on the design and layout of hydropower facilities.
•    Support in the preparation and coordination of HDH mechanical design packages. 
•    Contribute to HDH technical proposals with scope definition and specification development while coordinating with other disciplines.
•    Support in the development of the HDH engineering team by building internal tools and processes.

Qualifications

•    Technical diploma in Mechanical Design
•    8+ years of relevant experience in the design and layout of mechanical systems for hydropower projects. The ideal candidate will have exposure to mechanical equipment found in Hydropower facilities including gates, stoplogs, trashracks, embedded parts, cranes, hoists, turbine generator equipment, piping and HVAC.
•    Exposure to related Codes, Norms, Standards and guidelines, including ASHRAE, B31.1, NFPA, plumbing code, USACE, etc.
•    Experienced with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, CADWorx, etc.
•    Demonstrated experience in the design and layout of mechanical systems considering the following:
    o    Constructability and commissioning execution
    o    Maintenance and operation
    o    Safety by design
•    Efficiency, client focus, autonomy, initiative, ability to work as part of a team
•    Strong communication and organizational skills. 
•    Site experience is an asset.
•    Experience working with 3D scans is an asset.
•    Proficient with English, French is an asset.
