Position Overview

Kiewit has an opening for a Rail & Transit Estimator in our growing group, which includes structural, geotechnical, civil, drainage, roadway, rail, and materials disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on the design-build delivery of infrastructure projects.  

District Overview

Eastern Canada District's projects include highways, bridges, mass transit, mine site development & open pit operations, hydroelectric powerhouses, wind-power plants, dams & industrial. They serve the construction and mining industries and operate in Eastern Canada.

Location

This position is based on our project downtown Toronto, Ontario. 

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate and determine the most efficient means and methods to estimate the cost to construct light rail, heavy rail, streetcar and/or other transit related projects
  • Develop complete estimates for very large, complex jobs.
  • Create logistic plans for material handling and sequential trackwork.
  • Create and estimate shutdown plans.
  • Self-motivated, able to meet deadlines working independently.
  • Train and mentor younger estimators in the preparation estimates.
  • Review estimates prepared by other estimating groups or V partners to determine data completeness and procedures; aid in resolving differences in bid items
  • Use recognized engineer techniques and procedures to conduct estimates and adhere to standard company policy and
  • Must be capable of handling major technical problems encountered during bid preparation.
  • Stay current on various trends and developments such as new equipment, methods, and procedures developing in the industry or specialized discipline (e.g., mechanical, electrical, etc.).
  • Prepare special studies or reports required by the unusual nature of some bid items or conditions.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil or construction-related technology, OR extensive and related work experience leading to a thorough understanding of the knowledge, skills and abilities described above
  • At least 7 years' experience in an estimating/pre-construction related role.
  • Extensive knowledge through demonstrated experience of railroad, light rail, heavy rail, streetcar, etc
  • Strong attention to detail; strong communication, interpersonal, leadership and team-building skills
  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Work,Outlook. PowerPoint)
  • Ability and willingness to learn and teach.
  • Broad knowledge and ability to understand project scheduling, cost control, specifications, and engineering drawings.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook, Powerpoint)
  • Experience with InEight Estimate (HardDollar) preferred.
  • Possess strong mathematical and computer skills.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Candidates must possess a strong work ethic. 
  • Work independently as well as part of a team. 
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Good attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, costs and techniques.
  • Must be willing to travel as the job requires. #LI-GH
