Position Overview

Kiewit has an immediate opening for a Water Resources Principal Engineer with experience in hydrology, hydraulics, highway drainage, culverts, storm systems, scour and revetment design, sediment transport, stream restoration and other hydraulic structures to support our growing Design Engineering Services team.   The successful candidate will bring energy, enthusiasm, possess a strong understanding of alternative delivery contracting as it pertains to transportation stormwater conveyance, and a focus on collaboration while providing technical, quality, and safety leadership for the engineers and designers on projects and pursuits throughout North America.

 

As a Water Resources Principal Engineer, you will be leading and mentoring engineers and designers and collaborating with our other design centers to provide drainage and water resources engineering expertise and designs for design/build and other alternative delivery projects across North America.

Responsibilities

  • Providing oversight and sponsorship for drainage design teams on complex design build projects and pursuits.  To enhance effectiveness as a sponsor, the Water Resources Principal Engineer may participate in task force meetings, owner meetings, comment resolution sessions or similar activities.
  • Guiding and mentoring teams responsible for completing engineering design in support of civil design build projects that includes drainage design, detailed hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, preparation of design plans, reports and technical memoranda.   
  • Providing senior review and support on preliminary engineering designs for alternative delivery contract pursuits, focusing on early identification of critical concepts technical risks and potential quantity growth.
  • Challenging design teams to balance a thorough understanding of site conditions, designs, and innovative solutions with an appropriate risk profile.
  • Advising and providing direction to staff on proper execution of complex and advanced deliverables; collaborating with staff and the Engineering Project Management Team to develop work scopes and labor estimates.
  • Serving as a senior level advisor, potentially on-site, for critical issues that emerge during the construction phase. 
  • Fostering an environment that emphasizes collaboration and coordination; providing feedback and encouraging learning to create growth opportunities; mentoring team members.
  • Serving as Engineer-of-Record on selected projects and/or project design elements.
  • Identifying, developing, and aligning high performance teams and individuals to meet organizational goals.
  • Interfacing with Clients, Construction Personnel, Subconsultants and Regulatory Agencies.  
  • Leading by example with respect to safety, quality, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Coordinating with the quality management team to train staff and implement the design quality management program.
  • Providing input on the strategic growth of the department, including the development of growth and development plans

Qualifications

  • Minimum 25 years of progressive experience, with a strong focus on drainage design, water resources, hydraulics and hydrology in transportation or land development.   Design Build experience is preferred.  
  • BS or MS in Civil Engineering, Water Resources (or similar field), and active PE license required
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including strong verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated focus on interdisciplinary design coordination and collaboration. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills resulting in exceptional rapport with people.  Proven success in initiating, promoting, and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships with co-workers and clients.
  • Strong project management skills including: scope development, schedule management and budget / financial management.
  • Demonstrated experience and a commitment to coaching and mentoring junior engineers
  • Demonstrated broad technical knowledge of engineering and technical solutions to issues related to the development of drainage plans, profiles, specs and estimates for either transportation, water resources or land development projects 
  • Software experience in Drainage design which may include some or all of the following:  HEC-RAS, HEC-GEORAS, HY-8, CulvertMaster, StormCAD, CivilStorm, PondPack, FlowMaster, HEC-HMS, SWMM, HydroCAD, Microstation (OpenRoads),  AutoCAD Civil 3D;  2D experience helpful such as SRH-2D, FLO-2D 
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and other Kiewit offices as needed

Base Compensation: $200,000 - $245,000 
(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
