Position Overview

Kiewit Industrial Engineering (K-IND) is seeking a Senior-Level Process/Fermentation Engineer.  We are looking for an ideal candidate to grow the Kiewit team by providing technical expertise serving as a subject matter expert and contributing to execution and project success.  Candidates shall have a minimum of 10 years of experience in process engineering, including specific experience with fermentation and other biodiesel feedstock and/or food and beverage processing facilities.  Candidates shall be familiar with current drawing and technical tools, programs, and software with an understanding of design documentatiion creation and layouts.  Candidates shall be capable of exhibiting flexibility in work assignments while maintaining a growth mindset and continuing to develop in their technical and professional career.

Our rapidly growing Industrial Engineering team, which includes process, mechanical, electrical, controls, structural, architectural, geotechnical, and civil disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on EPC and design-build delivery of industrial projects in markets such as Food & Beverage, Mineral Processing, Renewable Fuels, Pulp and Paper, Steel & Aluminum, Industrial Buildings, and Industrial Energy, Water and Utilities.

Location

This position is based out of our industrial hub in Lenexa, KS and may require up to 25 percent travel on average based on project demands. 

Responsibilities

•     Provide design, coordination, and oversight of various sanitary process systems typical for fermentation of biodiesel feedstock and other food and beverage process facilities with specific  experience in on or more of the following: fermentation, membrane filtration, sanitary piping design, clean in place, process control, and tank storage solutions..

•     Prepare equipment specfications and detailed technical bid analyses for typical equipment required for biodiesel feedstock fermentation and other food and beverage facilities with specific experience  in one or more of the following: fermenters, membrane filtration, centrifuges, vessels, evaporators, agitators, mixers, pumps, sanitary piping and tubing, condensers, and clean in place systems.

•     Generate and check design deliverables such as PFD's, P&ID's, process simulations, datasheets, and vendor shop drawings in accordance with industry codes and standards, contract requirements, and company standards..

•     Support the construction team including representing the design team on-site, answering RFI's, providing creative design solutions, etc..

•     Coordinate, communicate, and oversee all aspects of the project's process design with other design partners (both internal and external) including Clients, construction partners, equipment suppliers, and other engineers and designers..

•     Provide oversight and coordination of projects, working with the assigned design managers and project managers, to meet project budgets and schedules.

•     Develop schedules, work assignments, and staffing requirements to ensure successful project completion.

•     Perform early project design work such as conceptual studies, process flow diagram development, mass/energy balances, preliminary equipment sizing and selection, and general facility layout/arrangement.

•     Train, mentor, and advise peers and support staff on proper application of sanitary process and fermentation industry standards and best practices.

•     Support the general process engineering activities outside of the sanitary process and fermentation specific processes/equipment required to provide a complete turn-key design.

•     Serve as the company subject matter expert engaging in industry events and supporting company business development functions for sanitary systems and biodiesel feedstock fermentation applications and implementation.

•     Provide key input and oversight for all project biodiesel feedstock and food and beverage fermentation scopes throughout project development, estimating, project execution, and startup and commissioning.

Qualifications

•     Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Food Sciences, or equivalent engineering program from an ABET accredited four-year university.
•     Professional Engineer license (P.E.) preferred
•     A minimum of 10 years of industry related engineering experience including sanitary/hygienic design experience.
•     A broad understanding of industrial fermentation technologies and the market considerations..
•     Specific experience in one or more of the following areas: fermentation, membrane filtration, sanitary piping design, process control, and mixing/blending.
•    Strong familiarity and relationships with the key fermentation and process equipment suppliers in the industry.
•    Experience leading and engineering and design team is preferred.
•    System operations and/or commissioning experience is preferred.
