Position Overview

Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering is looking for a PLC Engineer. The candidate will work on projects with Kiewit Energy, Oil and Gas, Transportation, Water, and Industrial divisions. The ideal candidate should excel in programming PLCs and HMIs from scratch, adhering to both current Kiewit/Industry/Client standards and establishing new ones as needed. Additionally, the candidate should be adept at troubleshooting and programming existing PLC and HMI control systems, managing OT networks, and configuring and resolving issues related to network devices. Experience with configuring and troubleshooting server environments, both virtual and physical, is also essential. The PLC Engineer should possess 5 to 15 years of experience in engineering projects, demonstrate high technical proficiency, and be well-versed in contemporary tools, programs, and software.

Location

This position is based out of our Lenexa, Kansas office with expected travel to project sites. 

Responsibilities

•    Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria using independent judgment under the guidance of senior engineers. 
•    Develop control narratives, cause and effect diagrams, and control philosophies. 
•    Prepare Control System specifications.
•    Review and provide comments to P&IDs, loops diagrams, instrument datasheets, calculations and requisitions. 
•    Advise Kiewit project teams and clients on the appropriate type of Control System for water processes and/or other industrial applications. 
•    Understand and meet client requirements for electrical and mechanical needs.  
•    Read and interpret logical flow diagrams.  
•    Write PLC programs using IEC 61131 standard programming languages, with an emphasis on Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, Sequential Function Chart, and Structured Text.
•    Design HMI/SCADA graphic screens based on mechanical P&IDs or PFDs.
•    Prepare manuals to instruct users how to operate the Control System.
•    Test Control System programs using basic simulation code written in isolated task in the Controller code.  
•    Troubleshoot Control System and Network system faults.  
•    Supervise the installation of Control System programs by performing an IO Checkout and commissioning all the systems in the program.
•    Provide support and guidance to PLC Technicians.  
•    Provide end user Control System training to Plant Management, Operators, and Technicians.  
•    Coordinate with Kiewit Engineering team and end user.  
•    Have a working knowledge of industry standards and regulations (e.g., ISA, IEEE). 
•    Mentor and guide junior engineers, ensuring adherence to departmental design standards, applicable engineering codes, and Kiewit guidelines, and provide recommendations as necessary.
•    Collaborate on large water and/or industrial project teams, including in-house multi-discipline engineers and construction superintendents, to deliver the industry's best in both engineering and physical design to our Clients.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields of Engineering, such as Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university, is preferred. Relevant technical degrees will also be considered.
  • 5-15 years of experience working on multidisciplinary projects in the Industrial market.
  • Working experience as a PLC Programmer, or a similar role in the Engineering industry.  
  • Experience with Rockwell PLC and HMI platforms, as well Rockwell’s PlantPAx is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and software design principles.  
  • Extensive understanding of PLC programming languages such as Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, Sequential Function Chart, and Structured Text.
  • Experience designing, configuring, and troubleshooting OT controls networks with a strong understanding of network security. Preferred experience with Cisco, and Rockwell Stratix Switches.
  • Experience designing, configuring, and troubleshooting OT server environment. Preferred experience with virtual servers managed via VMWare vSphere.
  • Experience programming and commissioning VFDs and Smart MCCs.
  • Exceptional logic reasoning abilities.  
  • Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), and Bluebeam software.
