District Overview

The Overhead Transmission Subject Matter Expert will play a pivotal role in advancing Kiewit Power Delivery’s transmission engineering capabilities. This individual will collaborate across regions to provide deep technical insight, drive strategic execution aligned with our business vision, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. Core objectives include leading technical excellence, mentoring engineering teams, and optimizing project delivery for safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong transmission background, strategic thinking, and a “pleased but not satisfied” mindset—relentlessly pursuing innovation and quality in every phase of project execution.

This position can be based out of Lenexa, KS. 

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Lead technical excellence across large, complex transmission projects and pursuits.

• Collaborate with the Principal Transmission Engineer to set strategy, guide discipline initiatives and implement standards, templates, and tools.

• Represent Kiewit in industry technical committees and share insights internally.

• Conduct factory audits and witness testing with the Off-Site Supplier Quality (OSSQ) group.

• Maintain strong industry relationships to expand Kiewit Engineering’s reach.

Quality & Execution

• Ensure high-quality deliverables through peer reviews and QA/QC processes.

• Resolve major technical challenges decisively using industry standards and expertise.

• Guide early project strategy for optimal design, procurement, and construction.

• Champion cost-effective, high-quality execution through technical optimization.

• Serve as Engineer of Record when needed.

Design Oversight

• Stay current on emerging trends, equipment, and methodologies.

• Provide forensic analysis and corrective action plans for quality issues.

• Coordinate with the Temporary Structures & Construction Devices (TCSD) team.

• Train and advise construction teams on engineering engagement and workflows.

• Establish design criteria based on industry, company, and client standards.

Technical Review

• Review transmission line models in PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER.

• Evaluate drawings and specifications for tubular steel structures, lattice towers, and hardware.

• Assess vendor calculations and drawings for compliance.

• Oversee comprehensive construction packages including plan & profiles, staking sheets, stringing tables, BOMs, and installation specs.

• Ensure drawing packages meet client and code requirements.

Development & Collaboration

• Promote a culture of design excellence and continuous learning.

• Advise on proper application of codes and standards.

• Support contract compliance and technical deliverable accuracy.

• Present technical findings, analyze reports, and draft documentation using Microsoft 365 tools.

• Travel to construction sites, client offices, and supplier facilities as needed.

• Participate in Technical Risk Assessments (TRA) and design validation for EPC pursuits.

• Lead targeted training, onboarding, and career path development within the discipline.

• Foster knowledge sharing and connectivity across regional teams.

 

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates should demonstrate a strong blend of technical expertise, industry experience, and leadership capabilities:

Education & Credentials

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Structural, or a related engineering field

• Professional Engineer (P.E.) license (required)

Technical Expertise

• 10+ years of engineering experience in transmission projects

• Proficiency in:

o PLS-CADD, PLS-Pole, and PLS-TOWER

o MFAD and/or LPILE (both preferred)

• Familiarity with U.S. and international design standards, including:

o NESC, ASCE, IEEE, RUS, GO-95, PJM, CSA, and others

• Strong understanding of engineering and construction standards and processes
