Position Overview

Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering is seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Engineer. We are an innovative team of engineers and designers that supports projects throughout the company. Our rapidly growing Industrial Engineering team, which includes process, mechanical, electrical, controls, structural, architectural, geotechnical, and civil disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on EPC and design-build delivery of industrial projects in markets such as Food & Beverage, Mineral Processing, Renewable Fuels, Pulp and Paper, Steel & Aluminum, Industrial Buildings, and Industrial Energy, Water and Utilities. 

 

Location

This position is based out of Lenexa, KS. 

Responsibilities

  • Conduct engineering cost, feasibility and planning studies analyzing customer needs and data including researching, investigate and coordinate with other engineers, and providing recommendations to the customer.
  • Administer contracts for instrumentation and control equipment, especially the Distributed Control System (DCS).
  • Monitor and plan for required submittal dates. 
  • Respond to questions and Requests for Interpretation (RFIs) from the construction contractor dealing with applicable instrumentation and control systems, equipment, operations, and startup. 
  • Performs intermediate calculations and solves problems using well established scientific principles. 
  • Performs instrument air consumption, voltage drop, standard cases of control valve, relief valve, flow element sizing and thermowells vibration calculations.
  • Conducts routine technical assignments and develops small to mid-size project or proposals.
  • Works with designers to develop engineering and design documents as needed for the project.
  • Considers multiple solutions and makes good decisions based on good data analysis.
  • Recognizes, troubleshoots and resolves design constraints and issues.  Applies economic analysis to determine best cost solutions.  
  • Has good understanding of the complete design and has good input into ways of improving the design and lowering costs with little to no supervision.
  • Utilize codes and standards to complete assignments.
  • Identifies changes in the scope of work during a small project and produces design changes as needed to stay within budget and schedule.  
  • Performs assigned work efficiently and effectively to maximize person productivity.
  • Leads quality checks of the design and engineering of a small to mid-size project to ensure accuracy.
  • Establishes credibility in terms of technical competency. 

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering in an instrumentation controls, electrical, mechanical, chemical, physics, or equivalent engineering program from an ABET-accredited four-year college or university program
  • At least 8 years’ experience performing engineering-related duties
  • Professional Engineer license preferred
  • Familiarity with control system programming and fluency in reading logic diagrams 
  • Intermediate and advanced programming experience, especially with regard to DCS and/or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming 
  • Experience in field construction, industrial, power or start-up power plant work is desirable

Base Compensation: $93,747 - $122,951 
(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
