Position Overview
As a Field Engineer 3 at Kiewit, you will play a critical leadership role in the execution of complex infrastructure projects and oversee daily field engineering activities. You’ll provide technical guidance to field teams, ensure compliance with engineering standards, and optimize construction operations for safety, quality, and profitability. This role also includes coordinating closely with Superintendents and Project Managers. You will ensure construction activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with contract specifications. This position requires advanced technical expertise, strong coordination skills, and the ability to mentor a team of field engineers.

Kiewit’s Eastern District specializes in challenging heavy civil construction projects throughout the Northeast, including the metropolitan areas of New York, Chicago, Boston, and Washington DC. We are leaders in bridge, transit, foundation, tunnel, and water/wastewater construction while specializing in cast-in-place concrete, structural steel erection, earthwork, pile driving, and caissons. Responsibilities
Field Engineering:
- Lead and oversee daily field engineering activities on water infrastructure projects.
- Provide technical guidance to field teams and ensure adherence to engineering standards.
- Coordinate with Superintendents to align engineering support with construction sequencing and priorities.
- Conduct field assessments to optimize construction operations and improve profitability.
- Ensure compliance with contract specifications and quality standards.
- Mentor and manage junior field engineers, assigning tasks and reviewing performance.
Office Engineering:
- Develop and maintain project schedules, work plans, and progress tracking tools.
- Support cost reporting, forecasting, and budget analysis in collaboration with project controls.
- Review and manage construction documentation, RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
- Assist in contract administration and ensure documentation aligns with project requirements.
- Interface with vendors and subcontractors to ensure technical alignment and timely deliverables.
- Participate in project meetings and contribute to strategic planning and execution.
Estimating:
- Collaborate with preconstruction and estimating teams to provide technical input during bid development.
- Analyze drawings, specifications, and historical data to support accurate cost estimates.
- Evaluate subcontractor and vendor proposals for scope, pricing, and compliance.
- Provide constructability reviews and value engineering suggestions during the estimating phase.
- Support transition from estimating to execution by ensuring continuity of technical knowledge.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
- 3+ years of experience in field engineering, preferably in transportation/heavy civil infrastructure.
- Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
- Proficient in construction software (Primavera, Procore, Bluebeam, etc.).
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Deep understanding of construction contracts, project controls, and cost management.
