Position Overview

The structural estimating assistant department manager is responsible for the development, review, and presentation of the concrete and steel estimate. In this role, you will interpret owner requirements and site specific considerations, provide input on means and methods of construction, and assist the estimate team to develop consistent structural estimates for complex EPC projects. You will play a key role in coordination with other disciplines, project teams, and with internal and external partners. You will be responsible for assisting in the career development of discipline estimators, maintaining historical cost information, and development of estimating department standards.

This position will be based out of our Kiewit Power office in Lenexa, KS

Responsibilities

•    Oversight of multiple structural estimates for large, complex power and industrial plants with a team of engineers, designers, and estimators.
•    Review and interpret a Request for Proposal ( specifications, design criteria, general arrangement drawings, Geotech information, etc.) along with preliminary equipment vendor information to develop a conceptual design for the basis of the estimate.  Ensure we follow the RFP and understand the scope of work. 
•    Provide constructability and value engineering input to the engineering and design staff during the modeling and plot plan development.
•    Review conceptual designs that may include analysis, calculations, code research, historical design selection, layout, etc. as necessary to develop design documents to price the estimate.
•    Coordinates estimate development  with key personnel across disciplines and supports procurement team to meet the estimate schedule milestones
•    Supervise and train estimators in the preparation of quantity takeoffs, development of costs, and entry into InEight Estimate software. Apply comparable past cost productions and current material and subcontract pricing.
•    Review and/or compare self perform estimates prepared by subs or JV partners to determine completeness of scope, ensure we follow procedures, and aid in resolving major cost discrepancies.
•    Understands construction methods sufficiently to be able to clearly communicate the means and methods used to managers to gain buy in on selected approach.
•    Coordinates estimate development  with key personnel across disciplines and supports procurement team to meet the estimate schedule milestones.
•    Manages entry- and mid-level employees for skills development. Reviews their work progress and results and provides coaching as needed.
•    Navigates 3D models for review of the estimate to verify scope and provide comments.
•    Collaborate with various departments and subsidiary groups to get the expertise, resources, and support estimates needs.
•    Provides input on estimate assumptions based on production experience when detailed plans are not provided. 
•    Identify bid qualifications, risks, and assumptions along with quantities and pricing ensuring estimates and proposals are performed in accordance with company procedures and standards.
•    Participate in estimate reviews and presentations to executive management as needed.
•    Researches historical means and methods, coordination with staff from past projects, and communicate how estimated costs can be supported by recent work. Contributes to structural estimating standards to ensure high quality estimates and assist with the on-boarding of new staff. 

Qualifications

•    Undergraduate or graduate degree in civil, structural, or construction management, OR extensive and related work experience leading to a thorough understanding of the knowledge, skills and abilities described above
•    Strong understanding of concrete and steel construction operations.
•    5+ years relevant experience in Engineering, Construction Estimating, Project Engineering, or Construction Management
•    Licensed Professional Engineer  but not required
•    Travel <10% expected
•    Can provide guidance to less experienced engineers and/or those without previous estimating experience
•    Works collaboratively across departments and involves others in solving problems as needed.  Initiates meetings within own team, other disciplines, and internal partners to clarify and make decisions on structural scope with estimate management.
•    Supports project teams and departments in a positive and productive manner.  Works well with others to accomplish common goals and objectives.
•    Follows through on commitments made to internal and external customers and meets all required deadlines
•    Serves as project/discipline point of contact for external and internal customers
•    Able to manage multiple responsibilities by setting expectations and meeting deadlines
