Position Overview

Kiewit has an immediate opening for a Senior Structural Engineer specializing in Hydropower and Dams (H&D) to lead its structural design team, as well as provide engineering planning and coordination duties for H&D projects. The candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team that includes civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineers, as well as estimators, schedulers and other construction professionals to provide various services to internal groups for the development of H&D projects.

Responsibilities will include leading and growing the structural design team dedicated to H&D projects, as well as supporting engineering integration, design management, business development efforts, proposal preparation, and contribution to construction estimating, scheduling, and planning efforts.

Location

This position will be based out of Kiewit major hub locations across Canada (Laval, QC; Oakville, ON; Burnaby, BC) with travel as business necessitates to project sites and other offices.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Hydropower Design Manager:

  • Lead the dedicated H&D structural design team on projects, supported by the existing Kiewit Infrastructure Engineers’ structural design team (the latter not dedicated to H&D)
  • Act as a team leader for the members of the H&D structural design team. This includes:
    • Work planning and project assignment
    • Performing day-to-day management of the team members
    • Lead the growth of the team (staffing plan, recruiting, etc.)
    • Lead the development of the team (trainings, tools, etc.)
    • Mentoring and leading younger engineers in their technical development
  • Act as a project engineer/engineering integrator on selected H&D projects
  • Support in the coordination and management of selected H&D engineering projects
  • Support the growth of the H&D engineering team by participating in recruitment and integration efforts in other disciplines
  • Support the H&D business development efforts of Kiewit’s various Districts across North America.
  • Contribute to selected H&D technical proposals with scope definition, specification development, structural sketches, drawings and detailed designs
  • Support in the development of the H&D engineering team by building internal tools and processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering. A master’s degree or PhD is an asset.
  • 20+ years’ experience in structural engineering design for dams and hydropower projects 
  • Experience with project delivery models that include working directly with the contractor (one or several of Design-Build, Progressive Design-Build, Turn-key, I2PD, etc.)
  • License to practice engineering in at least one Canadian province OR one US state
  • Efficiency, client focus, initiative, ability to work independently and prioritize.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills. 
  • Very good communication in English, French is an asset
  • Hydraulic structures focused experience including: stability analyses, design of stability improvements to existing structures, structural design of new hydraulic structures (concrete dams, hydropower stations, spillways, sluiceways, weirs, locks, levies, etc.), condition assessment of existing hydraulic structures, structural design of repairs/refurbishments to existing hydraulic structures, dam safety assessments of hydraulic structures, etc.
