Position Overview

 

Kiewit has recently started a new design team specializing in Hydropower and Dams (H&D) and is seeking top performing contributors to support and sustain its growth over the coming years.


As such, we are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the design of hydropower projects (e.g. proposals, ECI mandates, greenfield projects, refurbishments, etc.).

 

The candidate will work closely with Design Engineering Managers as well as other technical teams (civil/structural, geotechnical, hydrotechnical, electrical) to provide various services to internal groups for the development of H&D projects.

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineering's Design-Build team is driving clients to turn to Kiewit during all stages of design-build projects.  Through our integrated design and construction approach, our multi-disciplinary team works together to improve schedule, control costs and minimize risk.

Location

 

This position will be based out of one of Kiewit's major hub locations across Canada (Laval, QC; Oakville, ON; Burnaby, BC) with travel as business necessitates to project sites and other offices.

Responsibilities

 

Under the supervision of the Hydropower and Dams’ Mechanical Discipline Lead: 

  • Support the design of mechanical systems (balance of plant, hydromechanical, heavy mechanical) for H&D projects, supported by the existing Kiewit design teams as needed (structural, mechanical, piping, pipelines)
  • Mentor and lead younger engineers in their technical development
  • Support in the coordination and management of H&D mechanical design packages 
  • Support the growth of the H&D engineering team by participating in recruitment and integration efforts 
  • Support the H&D business development efforts of Kiewit’s various Districts across North America.
  • Contribute to H&D technical proposals with scope definition, specification development, design calculations while coordinating with other disciplines.
  • Support in the development of the H&D engineering team by building internal tools and processes.

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. 
  • 15+ years of relevant experience in the design mechanical systems for hydropower projects. The ideal candidate will have experience in the design of:
    • Industrial HVAC systems for hydropower plants.  Prior experience with HVAC systems for underground facilities will be considered an asset.
    • Mechanical balance of plant piping systems (cooling water, compressed air, dewatering, drainage, hydraulic, lube oil, domestic water, wastewater, fire protection).
    • Sizing and specification of balance of plant equipment (pumps, compressors, fans, air handling units, oil/water separators, HPU’s, large valves).
    • Piping system design, piping material selection, piping specification development, pipe support design/specification.
    • Ductwork system design (sizing, supports, etc.).
    • Experience with hydromechanical equipment (turbines, gates, stoplogs, trashracks, embedded parts) will be considered an asset.
    • Experience with heavy mechanical equipment (cranes and hoists) will be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in the application of related Codes, Norms, Standards and guidelines, including ASHRAE, B31.1, NFPA, plumbing code, USACE, etc.
  • Proficiency in construction and commissioning of mechanical systems for hydropower plants.
  • Experience in the development of design deliverables in a Design-Build environment.
  • Licensed to practice engineering in Canada with eligibility to obtain licenses in other provinces or territories.
  • Licensed as a PE in the USA an asset. 
  • Efficiency, client focus, autonomy, initiative, ability to work independently and prioritize.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills. 
  • Proficient with English and French.
