Position Overview
Kiewit has recently started a new design team specializing in Hydropower, Dams and Hydraulic Structures (HDH) and is seeking top performing contributors to support and sustain its growth over the coming years.
As such, we are currently seeking an Intermediate Balance of Plant (BoP) Electrical Engineer to support the design of hydropower projects (e.g. pumped-storage and traditional hydro conceptual design, detailed design, estimates and execution etc.). The candidate will work closely with Design Engineering Managers as well as other technical teams (structural, mechanical, hydrotechnical) to provide various services to internal groups for the development of HDH projects.

Location
This position will be based out of Kiewit major hub locations across Canada (Laval, Oakville, Burnaby) with travel as business necessitates to project sites and other offices. Position could qualify for flexible remote work based upon candidate experience.
Responsibilities
- In collaboration with the Hydropower and Dams’ Electrical Discipline Lead:
- Support the detailed design of HDH projects in coordination with the existing Kiewit design teams as needed (structural, mechanical, piping etc.).
- Contribute to the preparation of HDH electrical design packages including:
- Facility power systems and distribution
- Electrical Auxiliaries and BOP, including sizing and selection of equipment
- Embedded grounding, raceway, and duct bank design
- Process and Instrumentation
- Protection and controls design
- Building electrical service systems including lighting, HVAC, security and fire detection
- Mentor and lead younger engineers in their technical development.
- Support the growth of the HDH engineering team by participating in recruitment and integration efforts.
- Contribute to HDH technical proposals with scope definition, specification development, design calculations while coordinating with other disciplines.
- Support in the development of the HDH engineering team by building internal tools and processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 6+ years of relevant experience in the design of electrical systems with experience in heavy industrial distribution or power generation considered an asset.
- Familiarity in the application of the most prominent electrical-related Codes, Norms, Standards and guidelines, most notably ANSI/IEEE and NEC.
- Working knowledge of ETAP, EasyPower or other equivalent electrical simulation software.
- Familiarity with low to medium voltage industrial distribution (e.g. 600V up to 13.8kV).
- Proficiency with the preparation and review of design drawings.
- Familiarity with the preparation of detailed design drawings.
- Licensed to practice engineering in Canada with eligibility to obtain licenses in other provinces or territories.
- Efficient and proactive with the ability to work independently and prioritize.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Proficient in English and in French. Functional knowledge of English (written and verbal) is considered as an asset since mobility across provinces in Canada is required. Lessons can be provided as needed.
