Position Overview

Kiewit offers construction and engineering services in a variety of markets including transportation; oil, gas and chemical; power; building; water/wastewater; industrial; and mining.   We are hiring a Logistics Lead, to support the Procurement Shared Services Department in the implementation of Kiewit’s procurement, transportation, customs, logistics procedures and initiatives for projects in any of our markets. In this role, your primary responsibility is to strategically plan, coordinate and ensure that materials and equipment purchased for our projects arrive in a timely and cost-efficient manner. We’re looking for a team player with the ability to work independently to meet deadlines, goals and objectives.  We are seeking an individual well versed in Logistics, domestic and international shipping, that can develop and execute logistics plans.

Location

This position can be based in either our Woodlands office in Houston or at our Dairy Ashford Houston location with up to 50% travel as necessary domestically and internationally.      

Responsibilities

  • Primary function is to oversee the door-to-door logistics operations of a large-scale construction project or incidental shipments.  Scope will include management of all modes of transport including modularization, barge, heavy haul and support of cross border transactions.
  • Ensure documentation is accurately processed, distributed and released to carrier, forwarders, customers and agents in a timely manner. 
  • Prepare or review all necessary data entry and confirmation of key milestones (departure, arrival, customs clearance, PODs, etc.) as specified by Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Communicates standard logistics metrics and reports weekly to the Project or District regarding engineered equipment and material delivery status.
  • Manages international shipping / receiving process, working with freight forwarders, carriers, and brokers to ensure proper documentation is completed to meet all compliance regulations.
  • Communicates & reinforces logistics plans. Maintains clear communication & close co-operation with the Project, Procurement, & major Suppliers. Works with Quality, Planning, Construction, Carriers and Customers to proactively avoid & resolve quality & service issues relating to logistics.
  • Coordinates operational redesign projects to improve performance & meet customer needs. Generates & implements innovations for logistical competitive advantage, Support the Logistics Team.
  • Select shipment routes, based on nature of goods shipped, cost, transit times, or security needs. 
  • Consolidate loads with common destination to reduce costs.
  • Reserve/book necessary space on ships, aircraft, trains and trucks. 
  • Arrange for special transport of sensitive cargoes, such as engineered equipment. 
  • Calculate weight, volume, or costs of goods to be moved. 
  • Complete shipment documentation such as bills of lading, packing lists, dock receipts, and certificates of origin. 
  • Ensure all processes, procedures, and standards are following internal ISO controls
  • Review and approve methods statements, lifting and transportation plans for critical and sensitive cargos and verify adherence of documentation to customs, insurance, or regulatory requirements. 
  • Lead the effort with Trade Compliance Team to facilitate the passage of goods through customs. 
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant legislation, political situations or other factors that could affect freight shipping. 
  • This position may require up to 50% travel.
     

Qualifications

  • A four-year college or university degree in related major plus eight (8) years experience in a related construction field (at least four of these years in a materials transportation, logistics or expediting management position); OR an associate degree in related major plus ten (10) years experience in a related construction field (at least four of these years in a materials transportation, logistics or expediting management position); OR a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) plus twelve (12) years experience in a related construction field (at least six of these years in a materials transportation, logistics or expediting management position) is preferred.  
  • Must have a broad working knowledge of all principles and methods for moving materials by air, rail, sea or road including relative costs and benefits. 
  • Broad knowledge of materials and heavy engineered equipment is required, dealing with complex logistical/transportation plans, and experience working with logistics for EPC projects is required, with the experience/understanding on how to estimate pricing and developing a logistics plan for transportation of responsible materials and equipment. 
  • Be detail oriented, Flexible and highly motivated, ability to work independently and part of a team and meet deadlines, goals and objectives. 
  • General knowledge of trade compliance and customs requirements to move equipment/materials across borders and internationally.
  • Experience performing feasibility studies to analyze and establish the best ways (cost and schedule) to move materials and equipment. 
  • Able to lead and direct others to execute logistics tasks.
  • Have a strong work ethic and professional demeanor, as well as effective time management and organizational skills,
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks efficiently and accurately, with excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Power Point, Word, Excel) and able to calculate costs and benefits of moving materials/equipment.
