Position Overview

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineering (KIE) has an immediate opening for a dynamic Senior CFD Engineer in our growing Rail & Transit Systems Group. You will be part of our rapidly growing Infrastructure Design Department, which includes structural, geotechnical, civil, drainage, roadway, rail, and materials disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on the design-build delivery of infrastructure projects.

 

The senior CFD engineer will be responsible for all aspects of the development of design concepts and use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation tools to determine performance requirements, tenability and the design of associated systems.  The primary function of this position is to provide senior consultancy services in the analysis and design of fire & life safety systems on transit/highway tunnels as well CFD modeling for various objectives on industrial, commercial and process facilities across North America. The Senior CFD engineer will participate in the definition of semi-complex and complex tunnel fire and life safety systems, selecting appropriate the mix of products and installation methods to provide the most cost-effective solutions.

Location

This position is based out of our Englewood, Colorado location.

Responsibilities
  • Review/preparation of design criteria documents, technical reports, calculations, drawings and specifications, aerodynamic and thermodynamic analysis, heating and cooling load calculations, loss calculations.
  • Providing support during design and construction activities.
  • Attending meetings with clients, agency and project team.
  • Project assignments may include, although not be limited to, vehicular or rail tunnels, transportation centers, transit maintenance facilities, pump stations, bridges, airports, industrial facilities, oil & gas process facilities.
  • Supporting business development and proposal efforts as required.
  • Provides specialized technical input to studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables.
  • Uses expertise in all steps of completing discipline component of PS&E package.
  • Assist in the commissioning of fire protection/life safety systems in commercial, institutional and industrial facilities.
  • Prepare technical reports and documentation of activity for the client and project management.
  • Ability to select technology, devices, equipment and/or components to meet performance requirements.
  • The senior CFD engineer ensures timely and efficient completion of the engineering projects to achieve company, customer and design system reliability and cost objectives. The role is responsible for technical scope, cost and schedule management of assigned tasks and projects. Plan, schedule and coordinates efforts with assigned staff and is responsible to meet team performance to project objectives in tight timelines.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive work experience and thorough understanding of the following, but not limited to:
  • Strong familiarity with the ANSYS CFD code (CFX or FLUNET); Minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience in the application of CFD codes.  StarCCM+, FDS and experience with other CFD codes will be considered.
  • Master’s Degree Mechanical Engineering preferably a doctorate or related discipline with focus on the application of CFD.
  • In depth knowledge of CFD including algorithms, turbulence modeling and multiphase flow methods and understanding of FEA for structures. In depth knowledge in fluid mechanics and heat transfer.
  • Experience in fire, combustion/radiation, fire suppression modeling, explosion modeling and free-surface flow modeling will be considered advantageous.
  • Expert knowledge of the current regulatory requirements for tunnel ventilation and fire safety, including NFPA 130 and NFPA 502 would be beneficial.
  • Must have excellent technical writing and verbal skills , and experience in supervision of less experienced engineers, designers and technicians.
  • Abilities to work well with clients and other staff; strong ability to work on multiple tasks at once
