Position Overview

Kiewit has an immediate opening for a Deputy Design Engineering Manager with experience in the design and construction of hydroelectric facilities, dams, and other hydraulic structures (HDH) to support Kiewit Corporation’s business across North America.

The successful candidate will bring energy, enthusiasm and a focus on collaboration while providing technical, quality, and safety leadership on projects and pursuits. The HDH Deputy Design Engineering Manager will work with an interdisciplinary team that includes civil, structural, geotechnical, mechanical, and electrical engineers, as well as estimators, schedulers, construction project managers, and other construction professionals.

In this role you will have the opportunity leverage and manage our Kiewit Engineering staff and subconsultants to deliver design-build, EPC, PPP, and other alternative-delivery hydropower, dams, and hydraulic structures projects across North America.

District Overview

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineering's Design-Build team is driving clients to turn to Kiewit during all stages of design-build projects.  Through our integrated design and construction approach, our multi-disciplinary team works together to improve schedule, control costs and minimize risk.  Our construction-focused engineers work collaboratively with our estimators and builders to design solutions that are innovative, constructible, and designed with a focus on safety.   Clients benefit from the proven processes and tools used by Kiewit to minimize project risk. Location

This position will be based out of Kiewit’s Lone Tree office with travel as business necessitates to project sites and other offices.

Responsibilities

Pre-Award/ FEED Process/ ECI work: 
•    Support the Design Manager in managing staff and activities for projects of varying size and complexity; develop staffing plans and schedules to meet the delivery schedule and task requirements. 
•    Support the leadership of Kiewit teams of design engineers, estimators, and consulting engineering subconsultants and ensure they are prepared to execute and deliver pre-award work products. 
•    Implement Kiewit's Design-Build estimating procedures with interdisciplinary pursuit teams to develop innovative and cost-effective bid phase designs, identify key project risks, and develop plans to mitigate those risks.
•    Work closely with Business Line Management staff to leverage relationships with subconsultants and owners to help position Kiewit for success. 
•    Participate in development and negotiation of teaming agreements between subconsultants, ensuring that Kiewit protocols and standards for commercial and risk terms are achieved. 
•    Ensure that project controls measures are implemented. Conduct periodic project reviews to oversee and facilitate successful project delivery performance. 
•    Lead transition from pre-award to post-award work planning and resource scheduling.  

Post-Award/ Detailed Design and Construction Support work: 
•    Support the leadership and management of a team of Kiewit design engineers and subconsultants; support the design engineering team so they are prepared to execute and deliver. 
•   Support the management of the design team to ensure work scopes are met while producing quality deliverables within the required schedule; lead risk and change management; balance needs of Engineering and Construction to deliver best outcomes for Kiewit. 
•    Support in the planning, direction, and supervision of activities of assigned personnel; provide and enforce proper delegation of management authority, responsibility, and accountability.   
•    Make certain the project team complies with contractual requirements while also exercising cost/schedule control to implement the approved design; ensure designs are completed with consistent application of design standards, regulatory requirements, technical approaches, and in accordance with the design quality management program.
•    Ensure Kiewit's Design-Build standard operating procedures for integrated project delivery are implemented by project teams; ensure Company’s project controls procedures are followed on projects to monitor and control design; monitor/control progress project management reviews. 
•    Develop action plans with timelines to implement strategies; collaborate with others to incorporate best ideas into plans and gain buy-in through effective communication. 
•    Interface and maintain relationships with relevant stakeholders working for Owners, Regulatory Agencies, other Kiewit operating districts, and design partners. 
•    Foster an environment that emphasizes collaboration and coordination; provide feedback and encourage learning to create growth opportunities; mentor and develop technical capabilities of team members.
•    Lead by example with respect to safety, quality, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Qualifications

•    Minimum 5 years of design management experience, with a strong focus on design-build or EPC delivery of dams, hydropower, pumped storage, and hydraulic structures projects.
•    At least 5 years’ experience as a technical contributor on dams, hydropower, pumped storage, and hydraulic structures projects.  Experience at site is an asset.
•    Professional engineering registration, required.
•    Bachelor’s degree or greater in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, or Geotechnical Engineering, or closely related field, required. 
•    Demonstrated broad technical knowledge and application of technical solutions to the rehabilitation of existing and design and construction of new hydroelectric, dam, and other hydraulic structures and other water resources projects, including ability to develop and evaluate innovative and cost-effective design solutions to problems and challenges.
•    Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on interdisciplinary design management and working in team environments. 
•    Strong work ethic and demonstrated ability to foster collaboration between technical and management teams working from other locations; demonstrated experience building, developing, and aligning high performance teams to meet organizational goals. 
•    Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships; enthusiastic and resilient attitude with drive to achieve and maximize opportunities. 
•    This position requires travel to project offices and work sites. Ability to travel based on business needs and requirements (at least 25%), including the physical ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environmental conditions.

Base Compensation: $135,000 - $157,859 
(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
