We are a high performing team of engineers and designers that develop projects through the project life-cycle engaging exciting projects throughout North America. Our staff leads the power markets engineering process and collaborates with Kiewit’s construction teams to approach construction driven engineering with a focus on safe, cost-effective, and innovative designs that achieve client expectations and further Kiewit’s legacy of excellence. 

Location

This position is based out of our Calgary, Alberta office or within reasonable driving distrance to the city, with some flexibility for hybrid and remote work. 

Responsibilities

Design and deliver Electrical Systems designs/3D models AND/OR Instrumentation and Controls designs/3D models for Power generation projects, that meet required specifications, codes and standards, using SmartPlant3D.  Collaborate with Electrical and I&C teams to integrate designs into overall project plans.  

 

I&C design:


Design control system architecture and design basis documents.  Experience delivering drawings, specifications for instrumentation and control systems, experience with locating instrumentation and instrument indexes. wiring and panel design diagrams and schematics, P&IDs, PFD's, logic diagrams, instrument lists and hookups, data sheets, network architecture diagrams, configuration of protective relay communication settings and etc. for Balance of Plant systems in Power generation or similar Energy facilities.  Experience with controls programming.  Experience with desining instrumentation to control pressure, tempoerature and flow of systems within a plant.  Experience with testing and startup of I&C systems in the field.  
Mentors other more Junior I&C designers.  Utilize Smartplant3D and Smartplant Instrument, Navisworks

 

Electrical Design:


Component and complete electrical system layouts including duct bank, embedded conduit, cable tray, grounding and lighting systems from concept to completion utilizing engineering documents, sketches or vendor data.  Deliverables include:  designing raceway, lighting and power plans, section, P&ID's, PFDs, Isometric drawings from the 3D model, electrical cable routing, in 3D, to generate a cable schedule, model electrical components using vendor submittals and electrical designs
Perform calculations to check allowable fill in conduits and cable tray systems according to NEC requirements; perform calculations to size pull boxes according to NEC requirements.
Develops 3D models, also checks and navigates in the 3D models for interferences and constructability and is field resource to assist field resolution on issues.  Mentors, guides, reviews more junior staff on the project and checks for accuracy and consistency.


For Lead roles:  


Depending on experience level, may be assigned to lead a project team.  Responsibilities when leading projects include:  Oversee and manage schedule, scope, budgets and forecasts for assigned project, lead team meetings and report on project progression updates and/or issues to project lead team.
Coordinates with project team by utilizing the Project Database: Request for Review Process, Holds List, ECN, Request for information from other disciplines, and all other applicable functions.

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years’ experience in Design with a background in electrical systems design or instrumentation and controls systems design for balance of plant systems.  
  • Prefer Electrical design or I&C design for Power generation or similar plants that would have complex systems (i.e., like turbine systems, steam generator systems, power plant control systems, DCS, switchgear, transformers, boiler feed and condensate systems, steam generation systems, heat exchangers, 
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting/Design preferred; minimum GED Diploma with relevant electrical design or instrumentation/controls design training
  • Experience utilizing 3D programs such as Smartplant3D, (or similar products), and have knowledge of the latest computer operating systems.
  • Must be able to conceptualize in a 3D environment.
  • Ability to work in a growing, adaptive and multi-discipline team environment, and work independently with limited direction and oversight
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; fluent in English language
  • To qualify as a Lead - must have experience leading teams, leading projects, where you are performing functions like overseeing budget, schedule, forecast, manpower utilization for power projects.
