Position Overview
The Commissioning Mechanical Superintendent will report directly to the Commissioning Manager and will be responsible for promoting and demonstrating strong leadership in safety performance. This role will assist in planning, directing, and coordinating the daily activities of Commissioning Mechanical Technicians and supporting construction craft. The Superintendent will assume direct responsibility for the completion of assigned mechanical and piping systems, ensuring all work is executed with the highest standards of safety, quality, and compliance.

Our rapidly growing Industrial & Water Engineering team, which includes process, mechanical, electrical, controls, structural, architectural, geotechnical, and civil disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused in markets such as Food & Beverage, Mineral Processing, Renewable Fuels, Pulp and Paper, Steel & Aluminum, Industrial Buildings, and Industrial Energy, Water and Utilities.
Location
The initial assignment for this position will be on our project site in Sparwood, BC, with support and coordination from our corporate office in Calgary, AB. The successful candidate must be willing and able to travel between both locations as required.
Responsibilities
• Conducts and actively participates in daily safety meetings, promoting a culture of safety awareness and accountability.
• Leads and enforces strict compliance with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and all applicable safety policies.
• Performs daily spot checks of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for each assigned crew to ensure safe work practices.
• Supports the development of scoped turnover packages and associated documentation for system handover.
• Assists in the creation of work packages related to system testing activities.
• Contributes to the development of test procedures for individual component and integrated system testing.
• Conducts drawing reviews to verify design accuracy and alignment with field installations.
• Supports the maintenance and updating of drawings and databases to ensure accurate “As-Built” records.
• Promotes and upholds good housekeeping standards in both office and field environments.
• Verifies availability of spare parts and consumables necessary for operation of assigned systems.
• Performs troubleshooting and fault isolation on mechanical and process systems; recommends solutions and provides detailed written reports of findings.
• Executes system and equipment checkout, ensuring compliance with OEM specifications, system descriptions, and industry best practices.
• Monitors progress of assigned systems and provides timely status updates to the Commissioning Manager.
• Participates in system walk-downs, performing construction process assessments and identifying deficiencies or punch list items.
• Conducts commissioning and testing of components, subsystems, and fully integrated systems to ensure compliance with contractual and functional requirements
Qualifications
• Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university or technical institution, or equivalent job-related experience. Preference given to candidates with both home office and field execution experience.
• Minimum of 15 years’ experience in industrial, gas processing, refinery, and/or petrochemical sectors.
• At least 5 years of hands-on experience in detailed mechanical systems engineering, including leadership roles or technical specialization.
• Strong technical knowledge of detailed design engineering processes and all major categories of mechanical systems.
• Demonstrated experience working within EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) project environments.
• Must be able to work a rotating shift schedule as required by project demands.
