Position Overview

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineers is seeking a Senior Structural Engineering Lead for our Construction Engineering Services (CES) group in the KIE Burnaby office. Looking for the ideal candidate to have the ability to manage the CES Engineering team and provide technical guidance on complex engineering work. The Sr. Structural Design Engineer should have at least 10-15 years’ experience in construction engineering plan production, be technically advanced and familiar with current technical tools/programs/software, and Structural codes.

Our Construction Engineering Services (CES) group provides value to the success of our clients’ projects by designing and building temporary works. Additionally, CES provides on-site engineering and coordination support for critical projects to help build Kiewit projects safety, on-time, and within budget.

The Engineering Design group tasks our Construction Engineering Services group to perform the following : Access for personnel and equipment, cofferdams, crane barges, critical crane lifts, custom equipment, fabrics structures, fall protection systems, falsework/formwork, hoisting and jacking systems, staged construction analysis, rebar cages support, temporary bridges, trestles, work platforms, gangways, tower cranes, and custom tools.

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineers (KIE) is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of our company that offers a variety of services, including, temporary and permanent design services for current projects and new project pursuits in the United States and Canada.  Our design services group has offices in Colorado, Nebraska, Washington State, and Toronto, Canada offering expertise in structural, geotechnical, civil, drainage, roadway, and materials disciplines.  Our engineering group is responsible for managing engineering assignments in support of Kiewit’s construction projects in both the United States and Canada.  As part of the engineering group, you will have the opportunity to work with other structural and geotechnical engineers, members of our interdisciplinary engineering team, as well as estimators, schedules and construction experts to provide advice on construction methodology, risk and the design of temporary works. 


This position is based out of Burnaby, BC. 

  • Lead engineering and CADD teams in developing preliminary and final plans and details
  • Coordination and resource planning between teams and other offices
  • Design of temporary structures including: falsework, support of excavation systems, temporary bridges, trestles, and other features relating to our construction operations
  • Develop task scopes, schedules and budgets for design deliverables for structural designs
  • Identify and understand technical requirements of high-risk projects and implement engineering principles to develop solutions
  • Provide technical reviews at the conceptual and final design stages of project development
  • Lead technical meetings and discussions; and strategize solutions to complex or unique technical problems
  • Identify technical differentiators and develop schemes for key project pursuits
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with Kiewit and/or project-specific Quality Management plans


  • Experience with temporary structures and/or construction engineering
  • Experience with the design of multiple bridge types in concrete and steel, and knowledge of staged construction analysis
  • Experience managing a team of engineers
  • Accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Structural or Civil Engineering
  • Master’s degree or greater in Structural Engineering is preferred
  • 10+ years’ experience in relevant structural engineering design
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in at least one province and eligibility for registration in the United States
  • Strong all-around theoretical knowledge of structural engineering principles
  • Experience with Design-Build delivery preferred
  • Preferred experience with engineering design software, i.e. programs such as RISA, MathCAD, CSI Bridge, MIDAS, Advance Design America, LUSAS, SOFiSTiK,
  • Have the knowledge and ability to analyze and design according to structural theories, design criteria, and codes such as CAN/CSA S-6, AASHTO LRFD, AISC, ACI, and other provincial and North American design codes
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong people skills and an ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Ability to travel as business requires
