The Assistant HRBP role at Kiewit will provide you an opportunity to support 300+ people in a strategic HR partner capacity while participating in a developmental program that takes HR Generalists from other industries and transforms them into construction/engineering HRBPs.  Under the direction of an HRBP you will have ample opportunity to make decisions and influence the business with guidance to get you there. This position will report to an HR Business Partner and work closely with department leadership teams.  Primary responsibility will be to ensure HR execution and performance for the assigned business units.  You’ll act as a liaison with HR Shared Services to ensure the delivery of support to exceed internal client needs, while leading various projects and initiatives as determined in the annual planning cycle.  As an Assistant HR Business Partner you will need to establish a strong partnership and execute initiatives related to developing and retaining a talented and engaged workforce.

District Overview

HR Operations is an integral partner and service provider at Kiewit.  In recent years, we have gone from decentralized HR groups to a unified, shared service team, with various HR Centers of Excellence.  Our vision is to be a best-in-class international HR organization. 


This position will be based out of our Burnaby office. 


•   Support the development of HR related strategies and ensure implementation and execution.
•   Maintain knowledge of progressive HR practices, trends and data points to drive enhancements.
•   Serve as a change agent by influencing key stakeholders in support of organizational effectiveness.
•   Development of succession plans and skills gap analysis, ensuring that they are consistently reviewed and that effective actions are in place.
•   Ensure coaching, feedback and performance systems are in place to maximize workforce productivity.
•   Lead implementation of programs to drive development, employee engagement and retention.
•   Serve as advisor to leadership teams by providing insights, consultation and support.
•   Act as a liaison with HR Shared Services to ensure the delivery of support to exceed internal client needs.
•   Provide feedback to influence the continuous improvement of HR services and processes.
In addition, here are a examples of the key areas that you will be supporting within our HR team:
•   Consult with managers on effective staff assignments and strategy.
•   Lead District succession planning process by providing sound insight, support and Identify additional learning and development trends based on future workforce needs.
•   Support program by serving as District EEO and ensuring communications and employee awareness.
•   Serve as liaison for high-risk terminations or separations of employees.
•   Employee dashboards, reports and data are utilized to drive business decisions and tactics.
•   Support implementation of standard communications, processes and reporting for HR annual cycle activities
•   Drive execution of employee performance programs and expectations to maximize workforce productivity.
•   Ensure employee differentiation process is clearly communicated and executed.
•   Support the execution of performance improvement plans and provide consultation as necessary.
•   Drive execution of leadership development programs and expectations to maximize workforce productivity.
•   Ensure leadership development needs are appropriately met.
•   Lead efforts to monitor workforce needs to District specific training needs.
•   Approve and ensure execution of District training plans and processes.
•   Monitor workforce productivity, retention and engagement for trends and changes that require intervention.
•   Support effective implementation and execution of employee engagement surveys and plans.
•   Provide needed insight and analysis to annual wage and bonus planning process.
•   Lead efforts to ensure effective utilization of Kiewit Job Architecture and make recommendations as needed.
•   Manage interim wage adjustments as needed – adjustments, title change, hourly to salary conversion, etc.
•   Drive executive advising by providing support, insight and coaching to leadership teams.
•   Ensure utilization of employee feedback surveys and monitor workforce from Onboarding through Exit Interviews.
•   Provide HR support for District Management Teams (DOR, HR Business Plans, Mid-Year Reviews, etc.).
•   Maintain employee visibility through Job visits and employee interaction.


•   3+ years’ of progressive HR experience, with a working knowledge of multiple human resource disciplines.
•   Previous experience as an HR Business Partner, HR Manager, and/or HR Generalist.
•   Bachelor’s degree in HR or related field.
•   Ability to relocate for future growth opportunities in HR for career trajectory over time.
•   Experienced HR professional who can strike a balance between systems thinking, HR program execution and process innovation.
•   Ability to travel overnight throughout the US and Canada up to 25% of the time.
•   Ability to communicate and influence individuals and groups to gain buy-in and acceptance of new ideas and approaches.
•   Proven ability to take initiative and build strong and productive personal relationships.
•   Sound business acumen, strong analytical skills, and high attention to detail.
