Position Overview

We are hiring Superintendents to support Underground projects, managing crews, as well as mentor and train other more junior Superintendents.  You with be responsible for the organization, work methods, scheduling, cost control, conformity with drawings and specification, workmanship, and assignment of work to accomplish the execution of the work, either directly or through General Foreman or Foreman. You will also work to maintain positive working relationships with clients, architect/engineer, suppliers, subcontractors, and jobsite staff. #UGPOSITIONS

 

You can expect to support complex Underground projects in diverse market areas, such as Transportation, Power, Oil and Gas, Mining and Water/Wastewater.  We are recognized as a leader in the tunneling industry because we have the experience, technology and equipment to complete even the most complex tunneling projects. Key capabilities for our underground team include tunnel boring machine operations, sequential excavation, drill and blast, shaft excavation and tunnel rehabilitation.

 

District Overview

The Underground District has been constructing underground facilities (tunneling, deep foundations) since 1949, and has completed more than 100 underground-related projects totaling more than $1B. We look for experienced Superintendents in Heavy Civil Construction with Tunneling/Underground work experience.

Location

Must be willing to go where the work is!  Project sites vary across North America. We relocate our teams based on the work that is available, combined with the development plans, skill sets and career goals of each team member. This means your Kiewit adventure is custom-designed to meet our shared needs.   Currently, our team needs Superintendents at this level for projects in the New York region.  Depending on the project, we either provide relocation or travel and living assistance for candidates beyond 50 miles from the project locations.    

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and develop junior Superintendents
  • Oversee all craft supervisors on the site and oversee total field construction to ensure project is constructed in accordance with design, budget and schedule requirements.  Continually develop, coach and mentor teams.  
  • Review and approve the balance of foremen, journeymen and laborer's composite labor rates
  • Develop and maintain open communication with crews, field engineers/coordinators, Safety, Quality, and clients.
  • Prepare work plans and scheduling to determine manpower levels, material quantities, and equipment requirements, manage contract administration and oversee subcontractor field meetings
  • Oversee and approve monthly job cost updates and quarterly cash flow projections.  Examine/inspect field conditions, troubleshoot problems, correct inaccuracies, and implement cost saving measures.
  • Monitor and manage cost vs budget; review and approve change orders.
  • Monitor job safety and provide job safety training and awareness for all personnel.  Advise Sr. level leaders and project management of potential problems, safety issues or schedule difficulties and able to assist in resolving those issues as required.
  • Monitor quality standards and ensure that technical specifications are being met. Ensure inspections are scheduled appropriately.
  • Develop and implement plans for project completion and turnover, and maintain daily records
  • Recommend where appropriate, organizational, policy and procedural or staff changes.  Ensure performance evaluations are completed in a timely manner. 

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in leadership of heavy civil construction projects, working to defined contract plans, specifications, applicable codes and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Experience in construction of Conventional Tunnels, TBM, Micro Tunnels, or Trenchless methods. HDD experience a plus but not required 
  • Self-starter, highly motivated with experience in cost management processes, planning, scheduling and logistics and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated experience and success in leadership, safety, negotiations, planning and contract administration
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethics and integrity, strong interpersonal skills & a passion for safety, with the ability to help us ensure that nobody gets hurt
  • The physical ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environmental conditions and move objects up to 30 pounds and willing to execute work performed underground.  
  • Ability and desire to travel and relocate as business requires. Project assignments may involve full relocation or temporary assignments facilitated by a turnaround schedule.

Base Compensation: $105,000 - $150,000 
(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
