Position Overview

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineers is seeking a Senior Structural Engineering Lead for our Construction Engineering Services (CES) group in the KIE Laval office.  Looking for the ideal candidate to have the ability to manage and develop a CES Engineering team and provide technical guidance on complex engineering work.  The Sr. Structural Design Engineer should have at least 10-15 years’ experience in construction engineering and at least 5 years of engineering management experience. 
Our Construction Engineering Services (CES) group provides value to the success of our clients’ projects by designing temporary works. Additionally, CES provides on-site engineering and coordination support for critical projects to help build Kiewit projects safely, on-time, and within budget.  The Construction Engineering Services group performs the following designs: Access for personnel and equipment, cofferdams, crane barges, critical crane lifts, custom equipment, fabrics structures, fall protection systems, falsework/formwork, hoisting and jacking systems, staged construction analysis, rebar cages support, temporary bridges, trestles, work platforms, tower cranes, and custom tools.

This position is based out of Laval.


  • Lead engineering and CADD teams in developing preliminary and final plans and details
  • Design of temporary structures including: falsework, support of excavation systems, temporary bridges, trestles, and other features relating to our construction operations
  • Manage staff and activities for a project of significant size and complexity and develop staffing plans and schedules to meet the delivery schedule and task requirements. 
  • Coordination and resource planning between teams and other offices
  • Develop task scopes, schedules and budgets for design deliverables for designs
  • Identify and understand technical requirements of high-risk projects and implement engineering principles to develop solutions
  • Provide technical reviews at the conceptual and final design stages of project development
  • Lead technical meetings and discussions; and strategize solutions to complex or unique technical problems
  • Identify technical differentiators and develop schemes for key project pursuits
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with Kiewit and/or project-specific Quality Management plans
  • Help identify design risks and assist with risk mitigation planning
  • Mentoring and developing technical capabilities of mid-level and junior staff. 


  • Experience with temporary structures and/or construction engineering
  • Experience with the design of multiple bridge types in concrete and steel, and knowledge of staged construction analysis
  • 5 or more years of managing an engineering and design team of at least 5 or more
  • Accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Structural or Civil Engineering 
  • Master’s degree or greater in Structural Engineering is preferred 
  • 10+ years’ experience in relevant structural engineering design
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in at least one province and eligibility for registration in Canada
  • Strong all-around theoretical knowledge of structural engineering principles
  • Experience with Design-Build delivery preferred
  • Preferred experience with engineering design software, i.e. programs such as RISA, MathCAD, CSI Bridge, MIDAS
  • Have the knowledge and ability to analyze and design according to structural theories, design criteria, and codes such as CAN/CSA S-6, AASHTO LRFD, AISC, ACI, and other provincial and North American design codes
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong people skills and an ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Ability to travel as business requires (15%)

  • Excellent technical and interpersonal skills, public speaking and persuasive ability; very strong financial management, team management, and leadership skills; ability to manage and coordinate efforts of various projects to produce and overall results.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships 
  • Demonstrated Quality Control / Quality Assurance experience 
  • Able to foster collaboration between technical and management teams working from other locations, and demonstrated team building and verbal/oral skills
