Position Overview

Kiewit is expanding its growing design team specializing in Hydropower and Dams (H&D) and is seeking top performing contributors to support and sustain its growth over the coming years.

As such, we are currently seeking a Senior Hydrotechnical Engineer and Deputy Discipline Lead to support the design of hydraulic structures for H&D projects (e.g. penstock hydraulic transients, surge dampening systems, approach channels, intake structures, spillways, etc.). The candidate will work closely with Design Engineering Managers and the drainage engineering team to provide various services to internal groups for the development of H&D projects.

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineering's Design-Build team is driving clients to turn to Kiewit during all stages of design-build projects.  Through our integrated design and construction approach, our multi-disciplinary team works together to improve schedule, control costs and minimize risk.  Our construction-focused engineers work collaboratively with our estimators and builders to design solutions that are innovative, constructible, and designed with a focus on safety.   Clients benefit from the proven processes and tools used by Kiewit to minimize project risk. Location

This position will be based out of Kiewit major hub locations across Canada (Laval, QC; Oakville, ON; Burnaby, BC) with travel as business necessitates to project sites and other offices in North America.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Hydropower and Dams’ Hydrotechnical Discipline Lead

  • Lead hydraulic design teams for H&D projects, supported by the existing Kiewit Infrastructure Engineers’ hydraulic and drainage design teams
  • Mentor and lead younger engineers in their technical development
  • Support in the coordination and management of H&D hydrotechnical packages delivery
  • Support the growth of the H&D engineering team by participating in recruitment and integration efforts 
  • Support the H&D business development efforts of Kiewit’s various Districts across North America.
  • Contribute to H&D technical proposals with scope definition, specification development, design calculations while coordinating with other disciplines.
  • Support in the development of the H&D engineering team by building internal tools and processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering or Water Resources Engineering. A Master’s degree or Ph.D. is an asset.
  • 15+ years of relevant experience in hydraulic engineering related to hydropower, dams and water resources infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in hydrological analyses and hydraulic modelling, including CFD, and experience in the quality control of these.
  • Experience and expertise with hydraulic transients analysis including design of surge systems for conventional and/or pumped storage hydro projects.
  • Experience with managing small teams.
  • Strong business acumen with an interest in growing the Hydropower and Dams business.
  • Licensed to practice engineering in Canada with eligibility to obtain licenses in other provinces or territories.
  • Licensed as a PE in the USA an asset. 
  • Efficiency, client focus, autonomy, initiative, ability to work independently and prioritize.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills. 
  • Proficient in English, proficiency in French is an asset
  • Must be able to travel as business requires across North America
