We are looking for several Building Design Managers to join our Industrial team, to support overall building design execution and coordination of overall multi-discipline personnel supporting the project, including performance and development. This position is similar to a building Architectural or MEP design "project manager". In this role, you will be the primary interface with proposal and engineering project teams, supporting your assigned projects(s) from concept into execution, managing the contract, working in a highly matrixed environment. You will drive estimating, productivity (schedule and quality) and monitor the project to ensure we will deliver on time and within budget for the overall building/facility into construction. District Overview
Kiewit Architectural & Engineering (KAE) delivers fully integrated design and engineering solutions for some of North America’s most complex and high visibility infrastructure, energy and building programs. Working hand in hand with Kiewit’s construction operations, the group provides coordinated Progressive Design Build (PDB), Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) and other alternative delivery models, that reduces risk, accelerates delivery, and drives innovative, cost-effective outcomes.
Powered by a multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers, and designers, KAE focuses on creating high performance, sustainable facilities across key growth markets including Power, Industrial, Nuclear, Federal, Aviation, Mission Critical, Healthcare, Sports & Entertainment, and Commercial Buildings. The team supports sophisticated projects in sectors such as government, nuclear, transportation/transit and education, delivering scalable, forward-looking solutions tailored to each client’s operational, regulatory, and long-term needs.
Location
This role is can be based out of Woodcliff Lake NJ, Manhattan NY or Seattle WA offices. We offer some flexibility for hybrid work out of those offices. We are looking for local candidates in those areas and are not offering relocation.
Responsibilities
- Lead the building project team, along with being, the primary interface with project management, engineering discipline leads and other key stakeholders. The building project team encompasses architects, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and BIM designers.
- Set expectations, for producitivity, and quality, as well as management and ownership of project performance (productivity, quality, milestones, manhour budget, and schedule). Monitor project and team metrics; On an as-needed identify underperformance early and implement recovery plans as soon as possible.
- Actively support project initiation and development in both the estimate and execution phases to ensure projects are set up for success.
- Manage project staffing needs to properly support each project with the mindset of serving both the project and the development of the team through setting and managing high expectations.
- Drive communication within the project team and various stakeholders ensuring understanding of ongoing activities, contractual requirements, budget, and overall project schedule. Working with our project controls team, develop and maintain schedules for design, procurement, installation through commissioning.
- Collaborate with the estimating department with lessons from production.
- The building lead is in charge of understanding the entire building scope of a project. They are the primary interface with procurement, construction, the client, and project management regarding building design and execution.
- Maintain and continue to develop relationships with EPC project stakeholders as the representative for IBG’s center of excellence for buildings. Lead design revviews, and technical coordination between the disciplines to ensure milestones are being met.
- Leads weekly building internal coordination meetings, Engineering meetings, as well as attend weekly project meetings in project controls, model walks, procurement.
- Provide accurate forecasting of project man-power needs to IBG department managers
- Define and own project schedules and various document control metrics
- Drive the EPC mindset on the project team.
- Know and manage the project contract requirements and what was included in the project estimate.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Architecture, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Architectural Engineering
- Minimum of 10+ years of relevant design/PM experience, performing functions as detailed above, with at least 7 years or more in building design and 3 years or more of relevant building project management experience leading a team (or a combination of those years in design plus management), where you have been the central point of contact for coordination of engineering, construction, and vendors.
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA) license, preferred
- Knowledge of multi-discipline industrial building design and at least 5+ years experience in similar leadership role as outlined above, leading technical resources, and managing scope/schedule/budget for a project.
- The candidate should be a solution-driven individual with leadership experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with a group of experienced professionals and drive things forward to completion.
- Experience with EPC and Design Build building execution is required
- Candidates with experience in any Industrial market are required and may include any or many of the following: Pharmaceutical, Nuclear, Federal Projects, Aviation, Transportatoin, Data Centers, Hospitals, Biotech, Distribution Centers, Power, Water/Wastewater Treatment, Sports Arenas, Facilities with regulated or clean rooms

Base Compensation: $120,000 - $170,000
(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
