Position Summary

The Field Quality Manager is responsible for overseeing on-site quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) activities for electrical substation construction projects. This role ensures that all construction work meets project specifications, industry standards, regulatory requirements, and client expectations. The position works closely with construction teams, engineering, contractors, and stakeholders to drive quality excellence throughout the project lifecycle.


Key Responsibilities

Quality Management & Oversight

  • Develop, implement, and maintain site-specific Quality Management Plans (QMP) for substation construction projects
  • Enforce compliance with project specifications, drawings, codes, and standards (e.g., IEEE, NESC, ISO, NEC)
  • Lead QA/QC inspections across civil, structural, electrical, and commissioning scopes
  • Ensure adherence to inspection and test plans (ITPs)

Field Inspections & Testing

  • Conduct routine site inspections and audits to verify workmanship quality
  • Monitor critical installation activities such as:
    • Foundations and grounding systems
    • Steel erection and equipment installation
    • Bus work, wiring, and cable terminations
  • Witness and verify factory acceptance tests (FAT), site acceptance tests (SAT), and commissioning activities

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate QA/QC documentation including:
    • Inspection reports
    • Non-conformance reports (NCRs)
    • Punch lists and corrective actions
  • Track quality metrics and provide regular reporting to project leadership
  • Ensure proper turnover documentation and as-built records are complete

Non-Conformance Management

  • Identify and document quality issues or deviations
  • Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective/preventive actions
  • Work with contractors and project teams to resolve deficiencies

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and contractors to ensure alignment on quality expectations
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for client and third-party quality audits
  • Support training and coaching of field personnel on quality standards and best practices

Continuous Improvement

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance field quality processes
  • Provide feedback into engineering and design to prevent recurring issues
  • Promote a culture of quality, safety, and accountability on-site

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certifications such as:
    • Certified Quality Manager (CQM)
    • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
    • NICET or equivalent
  • Experience working with EPC contractors or utility companies
  • Familiarity with digital QA/QC tools and construction management systems
