High School Construction Estimating Internship

District Overview

Kiewit's Water Facilities South group is one of Kiewit's leading water/wastewater districts specializing in constructing water treatment facilities, wastewater treatment facilities, and desalination plants. Although we are headquartered in Dallas TX, with regional offices throughout the southeast, we also pursue various projects stretching across the country. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about infrastructure and committed to the construction industry as opposed to design. Because our people receive continuous and extensive training, hands-on experience and challenging responsibilities from the day they join our team, they quickly develop the expertise that has earned our district its reputation as the premier contractor in the southeast United States.

Location

This position is based out of our Westlake, TX office. Housing is not provided, and each intern is responsible for their transportation to and from the office in Westlake, TX.

Responsibilities

• Assist the estimating team with reviewing project plans and specifications.
• Help calculate quantities of materials needed for construction projects.
• Research and collect pricing information from suppliers and vendors.
• Organize estimate documents, spreadsheets, and project data.
• Support cost tracking and budget-related activities.
• Learn how construction bids and project estimates are prepared.
• Participate in team meetings and gain exposure to the planning process for major construction projects.

Qualifications

• To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
• Current high school Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
• Ability to work part-time during the school year, providing own transportation.
• A natural curiosity and passion for the construction industry.
• Strong analytical ability with a mind for process improvement
• Detail-oriented work style with a focus on accuracy
• Ability to work both independently and in a team setting to accomplish common goals
• Ability to present and speak publicly to both small and large groups within the organization
• Demonstrates professionalism and maturity on a day-to-day basis
• Ability to effectively manage time and prioritize workload accordingly
• Preferably has held a leadership role within a team, organization, club, etc
• Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, and PowerPoint)
