Position Overview

We are seeking a Systems Assurance Lead Engineer with a background and skillset in RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety) to join our growing Rail & Transit Systems Team in Toronto. The candidate will work closely with our Systems Assurance and Systems Integration Managers and the broader Rail & Transit Systems Team on the delivery of an expanding portfolio of projects inclusive of the Union Station Enhancement Project.
 

The position offers the opportunity for personal growth, skill enhancement and professional development especially in relation to broadening of RAMS and security expertise within the rail environment, while also providing opportunities to interface and present with industry professionals. The Systems Assurance Lead Engineer will be directly mentored by experts in the field as part of a multi-disciplinary team, exposing the individual to a wide variety of technical aspects from O&M to various types of Systems, and Civil Infrastructure.

Location

This position is based out of our Toronto, Canada location.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will apply RAMS processes, and appropriate methods and techniques within projects according to client requirements; applicable Rules, Regulations, and Standards; to ensure the compliance of RAMS processes; gathering and/or establishing RAMS requirements for designs and supporting interface management activities; perform appropriate design analysis and verifications to demonstrate RAMS requirements compliance.

Additional areas the candidate will be exposed to and may support include:

  • Reviewing and understanding contractual performance RAMS and security requirements;
  • Performing reliability prediction modelling of rail and transit wayside systems and apportioning RAM requirements to lower subsystem levels accordingly through the application of various techniques, such as Reliability Block Diagram and Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis;
  • Performing independent 'peer review’ RAM calculations to verify product, subsystem, and integrated design;
  • Defining maintenance and Life Cycle Cost (LCC) strategy to ensure design reliability and optimize operation and maintenance costs;
  • Reviewing suppliers' RAMS documentation and addressing non-compliances with the support of the project team;
  • Developing and executing RAMS Management plans and Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action System (FRACAS) strategy in  collaboration with the Project;
  • Ensure that established Systems Assurance/RAMS processes are being followed throughout the project lifecycle;
  • Perform various analyses as described in the EN50126 , Canadian Method of Risk Evaluation and Assessment or as required by MIL-STD-882. 
  • Developing, reviewing, or otherwise supporting Threat and Vulnerability Assessment process. Assisting to derive project security requirements that mitigate vulnerabilities through the design development process and contributing to the authorship of Security Related deliverables according to program needs.
  • Developing, reviewing, or otherwise supporting the progression of the project Integrated Hazard Log. Assisting to derive project safety requirements that mitigate hazards through the design development process and contributing to the authorship of Safety Related Deliverables according to program needs.
  • Supporting the development of the Engineering Safety Assurance Cases and arguments to produce or identify appropriate evidence and demonstration of RAMS and security for the program.
     

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • P.Eng. in Ontario or British Columbia preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years working in a Systems Engineering/Systems Assurance/RAMS environment with preference to those with rail transit experience is required
  • Must be familiar with the application of CENELEC standards
  • Experience in the Systems Engineering lifecycle is an asset, including typical tools for requirements development (for example, DOORS)
  • The candidate should have a technical basis in engineering (from academics and work experience, ideally with professional consulting work experience) and have technical written and oral communication skills as the role will frequently involve collaboration with clients, contractors, and other engineering firms in a rail transit engineering and/or delivery environment.
  • Ability to regularly report to corporate and / or project site office
  • Experience on challenging Rail & Transit projects with direct client interface and complete project life-cycle (concept design through to commissioning & handover) is an asset.
  • Project Management experience is an asset.
  • Must have excellent organizational and communication skills 
  • The individual must be inquisitive and willing to learn about a wide variety of rail systems requirements as part of the team.
  • The individual will be required to plan, organize, and coordinate work with groups of professionals and technicians.
