Position Overview

The Drill & Shoot Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all drilling, blasting, and rock excavation activities on heavy civil construction projects. This position oversees field operations, personnel, equipment, subcontractors, and production activities while ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. The Superintendent works closely with project management, engineering, and field leadership teams to safely execute drill and blast operations while maintaining schedule, quality, and cost objectives.

District Overview

Kiewit's South Central District is one of Kiewit's leading infrastructure districts specializing in heavy civil, transportation, and water resource markets. Projects you could be working on could include mass grading, drainage, paving, utility and more.  Although most of our work is regionally based in the south-central region of the United States, we also pursue various projects stretching across the United States. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about infrastructure and committed to the construction industry as opposed to design. 

Location

This position will be based on a project in the Big Bend area.

Responsibilities

  • Execute blasting work as the Blaster in Charge
  • Lead and supervise all drilling, blasting, and rock excavation operations to ensure safe, efficient, and productive project execution. 
  • Develop and implement drill and blast plans, sequencing, production schedules, and excavation strategies.
  • Manage field crews, foremen, drill operators, blasters, equipment operators, subcontractors, and support personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, MSHA (where applicable), ATF regulations, company safety policies, and environmental requirements.
  • Monitor production, productivity, equipment utilization, and excavation quantities to meet schedule and cost objectives.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, surveyors, and clients to support project planning, execution, and reporting.
  • Oversee blast performance, excavation quality, vibration control, and environmental impacts while ensuring compliance with project specifications.
  • Manage drilling and blasting equipment, explosives inventory, maintenance activities, and material procurement.
  • Conduct safety meetings, inspections, incident investigations, and corrective action planning.
  • Maintain accurate production records, blast reports, permits, quantity tracking, and project documentation.
  • Mentor and develop field personnel while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence.

 

Qualifications

6+ years of heavy civil construction experience with significant drill and blast experience.
2+ years in a superintendent, general superintendent, or similar leadership role.
Strong knowledge of drilling methods, blasting techniques, explosives, and rock excavation operations.
Experience managing crews on highway, infrastructure, mining, quarry, underground, tunnel, dam, or large earthwork projects.
Ability to read plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and blast designs.
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency with production tracking, scheduling, and reporting tools.
