In this role, you can expect to wear a lot of hats on our construction jobsites. Our Sr. Safety Specialists are trainers in safety, strong communicators, enforcers, investigators, auditors, motivators, leaders and mentors. Our Safety personnel support and reinforce job site safety by ensuring that the project teams are following our safety guidelines and procedures.
You can expect to support complex Underground projects in diverse market areas, such as Transportation, Power, Oil and Gas, Mining and Water/Wastewater. We have the experience, technology and equipment to complete even the most complex tunneling projects. Our long-standing success is built on our depth of expertise, safety record, access to specialty equipment and the ability to self-perform work. Key capabilities for our underground team include tunnel boring machine operations, sequential excavation, drill and blast, shaft excavation and tunnel rehabilitation.
District Overview
The Underground District has been constructing underground facilities (tunneling, deep foundations) since 1949, and has completed more than 100 underground-related projects totaling more than $1B. We are recognized as a leader in the tunneling industry and our services include TBM Rock, TBM Soft Ground, Sequential Excavation, Drill and Blast, Shaft Excavation, Concrete, Tunnel Rehab, and Numerous Trenchless Methods.
Location

Responsibilities
- Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing district Safety Programs at project sites. Implementation would include ensuring all Staff and Craft have a clear understanding of programs. Manage programs on a go forward basis addressing areas of improvement and feedback received.
- Understand and be able to explain facts and information related to Kiewit’s Safety Program, Policies and Site-Specific Safety Plans
- Plan and conduct safety orientation, other safety trainings, safety tours, workplace audits and incident response as needed.
- Coach Safety Professionals, Foreman and Craft on proper completion of Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
- Know Life-Changing Categories, complete Safeguard Assessments and proactively intervene if you see a potential unsafe act
- Embody the Kiewit approach to safety, being constantly aware of conditions and work practices, being empowered to stop all unsafe work when needed.
- Support development of Safety recognition program. Administer recognition program.
- Engage with members of Craft Voice in Safety (CVIS) and participate in weekly meetings
- Understands project and type of work to appropriately review hazards and provide feedback to Front Line Supervisors
- Train, mentor and help develop new Safety Professionals to site (Safety Specialist 2, Safety Specialist 1, Interns)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Construction Management, or another related field and 4 years industry (Safety) experience, working on Heavy Civil Construction projects, OR 8 years (Safety) experience, working on Heavy Civil Construction projects
- CHST preferred
- Knowledge of construction safety, current Federal and OSHA requirements is a must. Certification of Professional or Emergency Medical Technician is also desired
- Experience with Underground projects highly desired
- Experience providing safety training to others, and developing safe work plans is required
- Experience with job hazard recognition, record keeping and injury management experience required
- Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments, around large, moving equipment and willingness to work underground and on various shifts that may include nights and weekends.
- Willingness to relocate to project sites across the USA for an extended period of time.
- Ability to demonstrate independent professional judgement given limited supervision
- Strong communication skills, strong work ethics and able to work independently and as part of a team.

Base Compensation: $80,222 - $120,332
(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
