Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced backend engineer to join our Kiewit Technology Group (KTG) team with deep expertise in transactional database systems across both on-premises and Azure environments. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technologist and thought leader who can architect, optimize, and guide strategic decisions on hybrid data storage solutions that balance performance, cost, and scalability.

This is an in-office role located on our LaVista, NE Campus.

Responsibilities

 
  • Design, build, and maintain backend services that integrate seamlessly across on-prem and Azure cloud environments.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert and thought leader for transactional database technologies and hybrid deployment architectures.
  • Evaluate, select, and implement the optimal database platform—on-prem, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, or Cosmos DB—based on business and technical requirements.
  • Tune and optimize high-volume transactional databases for both cloud and on-prem workloads, ensuring reliability, performance, and cost efficiency.
  • Define and implement migration strategies for workloads transitioning between on-prem and Azure.
  • Apply FinOps principles to monitor and optimize cloud usage and costs while maintaining operational excellence.
  • Establish best practices for data modeling, schema design, and query optimization across hybrid environments.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, data, and security teams to ensure compliance, scalability, and high availability.
  • Mentor team members and contribute to thought leadership in the transactional data space. 

Qualifications

 

  • 3+ years of experience in backend software development (C#, .NET, Python, Go, or similar).
  • 5+ years of experience tuning and optimizing transactional databases (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Cosmos DB).
  • Proven track record of designing and managing hybrid database architectures combining on-prem and Azure components.
  • Strong understanding of database replication, networking, and security models across hybrid environments.
  • Experience implementing FinOps practices and using Azure Cost Management + Billing and Azure Advisor.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills; ability to make strategic platform decisions based on business priorities. 

 

Preferred

  • Microsoft certifications such as Azure Database Administrator Associate or Azure Solutions Architect Expert.
  • Experience with Azure Arc, Azure DevOps, Terraform, or Bicep for hybrid infrastructure management.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes (AKS), Service Bus, and Event Hubs for integration and orchestration.
