Position Overview

Kiewit is looking for an entry-level Data Engineer to join our Data Platform team. In this role, you'll help build, test, and maintain the pipelines and infrastructure that move data from source systems into analytics-ready tables, working alongside experienced engineers who will mentor you as you grow into production ownership. This is a great fit for a recent graduate with strong fundamentals in SQL, Python, and data modeling who is curious, detail-oriented, and comfortable asking questions in ambiguous situations.

Location

This position will be based out of our office at 12312 Port Grace Blvd, La Vista, NE 68128. This is not a remote or hybrid work opportunity. 

Responsibilities

•    Write and maintain SQL transformations and Python scripts that support data ingestion and transformation workflows
•    Assist in building and testing ETL/ELT pipelines under the guidance of senior engineers
•    Contribute to code reviews, documentation, and testing practices that keep our data trustworthy
•    Collaborate with analysts, data architects and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and troubleshoot issues
•    Learn and apply our data stack (cloud lake house, orchestration, and transformation tooling)
•    Surface blockers, ask questions, and propose solutions as part of a collaborative team

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
•    0–3 years of relevant experience (internships, academic/personal projects, or early-career work in data, analytics, or software)
•    Demonstrable internship or project coursework experience with data, analytics, and business stakeholders
•    Degree in Computer Science / Computer Science & Engineering, Data Science or similar
•    SQL proficiency: basic joins, aggregations, and database normalization concepts
•    Python (or similar): comfortable writing scripts, using libraries like pandas, and understands functions/OOP basics
•    Git/GitHub: has used version control in a class project or personal repo; understands branches/PRs at least conceptually
•    Conceptual understanding of data pipelines: can explain ETL/ELT and batch vs. streaming at a high level
•    Comfort with the command line and basic cloud/dev environment navigation
•    Strong written communication skills for documentation and async collaboration

 

Preferred Qualifications
•    Exposure to a cloud platform such as Azure, or GCP
•    Familiarity with modern data tooling such as Databricks, dbt, Snowflake
•    Experience with data quality or testing frameworks 
•    Coursework or project experience involving data warehousing or dimensional modeling
