Position Overview

The Survey Party Chief is responsible for leading field survey operations in support of the Mobile River Bridge & Bayway Project. This role oversees survey crews, coordinates survey activities with construction teams, and ensures accurate layout, control, and as-built data collection for major bridge, roadway, marine, and heavy civil construction work. The Survey Party Chief plays a critical role in maintaining project quality by providing precise survey information that supports safe and efficient construction operations.

The district delivers major bridge, marine, and heavy civil projects, including cable-stayed bridges, suspension bridges, movable bridges, ports, terminals, wharves, piers, and waterfront structures. Leveraging self-perform capabilities, Bridge & Marine executes critical work such as foundations, marine operations, structural concrete, steel erection, and heavy lifts, providing clients with safe, innovative, and high-quality solutions on some of the industry's most challenging projects.

This position is based in Mobile, Alabama. Out of region candidates may be eligible for relocation assistance. #LI-RP1 

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise survey crews performing construction layout, control surveys, as-built surveys, and quantity verification.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, plans, specifications, and survey data to support field construction activities.
  • Perform layout for bridge structures, foundations, roadway alignments, drainage systems, utilities, and marine works.
  • Establish, maintain, and verify horizontal and vertical control networks across the project.
  • Operate and oversee the use of GPS, robotic total stations, digital levels, laser scanners, and other survey equipment.
  • Collect, process, and manage survey data using approved software and project standards.
  • Coordinate survey activities with project engineers, superintendents, and subcontractors to support construction schedules.
  • Verify construction work meets design tolerances and project specifications.
  • Prepare survey reports, field notes, as-built documentation, and daily survey records.
  • Troubleshoot field survey issues and resolve conflicts between design documents and existing field conditions.
  • Promote and enforce project safety requirements and participate in safety planning activities.

Qualifications

  • Diploma, Associate Degree, or Bachelor's Degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of construction surveying experience, preferably on large infrastructure, bridge, transportation, or heavy civil projects.
  • Experience leading survey crews in a construction environment.
  • Strong understanding of construction staking, control surveys, topographic surveys, and as-built verification.
  • Proficiency with GPS, robotic total stations, data collectors, and survey software.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, specifications, and CAD drawings.
  • Working knowledge of survey calculations, coordinate systems, and quality control procedures.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout the project site.
