Position Overview

We are currently looking for an onsite Environmental Specialist or Engineer, to lead and oversee the environmental management practices of construction projects in the Heavy Civil infrastructure sector (Highway, Bridge, Aviation) and for civil scopes in Power. Initially, you will be located on a large Bridge Program in Louisville Kentucky.  Once this project is completed, you will move onto another project within the district, which may be located in another state which could include CO, NE, TN, KS, MO, IA.  In this role you will work with the construction team to oversee, coordinate and implement project wide environmental compliance programs and strategies.  You will ensure the field team is aligned with federal, state and local environmental laws, to safeguard our projects from delays, violations, or fines.  This is an exciting position where you will not only ensure compliance with legal and contractual environmental requirements for the project but also contribute to Kiewit’s enduring dedication to corporate social responsibility.  This is a great blend of regulatory interpretation, field inspections/auditing, hazards analysis, documentation/reporting, and permitting.

District Overview

Kiewit’s Central District is one of our largest heavy infrastructure districts specializing in heavy civil, structural concrete/bridge, water/wastewater, and transportation projects. We self-perform work such as mass grading, drainage, paving, utility and more - so be ready to get your hands dirty! While headquartered in Denver, Colorado, the majority of our work is concentrated in the Central and South-Central regions of the United States. We are looking for people committed to the construction industry rather than design.  

Location

Your initial project will be located in the Louisville KY area.  Our Central district supports projects in the Central US region including CO, NE, KS, MO, MT, MN, WY, ND, SD, NM, IA, TN, KY, MS, so future projects could be in any of those states.   

Responsibilities


•    Lead the environmental compliance for the Project by coordinating, managing and implementing project-wide environmental compliance programs and strategies.
•    Identify, assess and reduce environmental risks to the company.
•    Identify applicable environmental requirements at federal, state and local levels for the project which may include hazardous waste, air quality, storm water, spill plans, etc.
•    Identify and obtain applicable permits and manage as required in the Environmental Management System.
•    Review and interpret environmental specifications and drawings.
•    Prepare, update and implement site specific environmental plans and submit required reports.
•    Develop a comprehensive compliance tracking matrix to capture all environmental requirements.
•    Provide input to work plans and participate in meetings.
•    Develop and conduct environmental protection and awareness training to staff at all levels.
•    Communicate with field crews to ensure understanding of project environmental requirements.
•    Perform and oversee field inspections and monitoring (water, waste, noise, etc.)
•    Identify, document, report and develop corrective actions for environmental incidents.
•    Participate in project audits (both internal and external).
•    Liaise with environmental agencies and attend field visits with client and regulatory agencies.
•    Identify project materials and vendors needed to support the environmental requirements at the project.
•    Monitor, forecast and communicate environmental costs at the project level.
•    Maintain records of all requirements and monitor compliance tools.

Qualifications

•    Ability to travel and relocate as needed throughout your career.  Willing to work in a construction setting.  
•    Bachelor's degree in environmental health, environmental engineering, environmental studies or another related field is preferred.
•    Minimum of 5 years experience performing functions as defined above in our responsibilities.   Experience performing environmental audits/inspections is required.  
•    Demonstrated experience related to the areas of responsibility for environmental compliance for major transportation construction projects or similar is a plus
•    Interest in growing in an environmental role in a construction project setting.
•    Highly motivated and self-managed to get things done right the first time.
•    Effective and strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
•    Proficient in MS Office (Power Point, Word, Excel) and other relevant software systems.
•    Excellent organizational abilities and time management skills.
•    Strong work ethic and willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
•    The ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
•    Uncompromising attitude toward safety and integrity.

Additional Preferred Qualifications: 
•    Stormwater inspections and reporting
•    SWPPP and SPCC Plan development and implementation
•    Experience conducting environmental audits
•    Experience developing and implementing training programs
•    Demonstrated experience in supporting environmental permitting on construction projects
•    Experience interfacing with environmental regulators at the local, state and federal level
