Position Overview
Kiewit Infrastructure Engineering has an immediate opening for a dynamic Geotechnical/Tunneling Engineer in our growing Design Engineering Services (DES) Group. The Geotechnical/Tunneling Engineer will work on an interdisciplinary team to perform engineering analysis and design for temporary and permanent works for civil infrastructure projects.
You will be part of our rapidly growing Infrastructure Design Department, which includes structural, geotechnical, civil, drainage, roadway, rail/transit and systems, and materials disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on the design-build delivery of infrastructure projects.

Location
This position can be located in Lone Tree, Colorado or Woodcliff Lake, NJ with up to 50% of travel to projects and other office locations; other office locations may be considered based on a candidate’s location, qualifications, and experience. Opportunities for flexible work may be available.
Responsibilities
- Provide support during proposal/bid, design, and construction phases for interpretation and assessment of ground conditions, review of bid documents and assessment of geotechnical conditions, and design of initial and final ground support systems for shafts, tunnels, caverns, adits, and portals, especially initial rock support and rock loads. Also assessment and design of support for rock slopes and rock cuts for civil infrastructure projects.
- Perform ground characterization of subsurface conditions to develop parameters for empirical and numerical analyses, including review of boring and laboratory data, and performing and interpreting geologic mapping and fracture data.
- Perform and support geotechnical and rock mechanics analyses including assessment of ground and rock stability, development of earth and water loads, development of initial and final support, and deformation and construction impact analyses.
- Perform or assist in the development of other aspects of underground design including groundwater inflow estimates, ground improvement designs, ground support system designs.
- Support and/or lead the development of deliverables including technical memoranda, geotechnical design and geotechnical baseline reports, construction drawings, and specifications. Perform coordination with other disciplines and construction districts for development of designs.
- Perform field work including inspections, rock mapping, assessment of ground conditions for scaling and support measures, and oversight of installation and testing of ground support elements.
- Provide oversight and training for the development of staff engineers, inspectors, and other professionals, both in the office and in the field.
Qualifications
- 8-15 years of progressive geotechnical, mining, and/or geological engineering experience in design of shafts, tunnels, portals, adits, caverns, and rock slopes.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Geotechnical, Geological, or Mining Engineering or closely related field, required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the U.S. and/or Canada.
- Experience with collection and interpretation of field and lab data, assessment of joint sets, kinematic analyses, development of support systems including empirical/analytical methods and finite element modeling.
- Experience with rock mapping, inspection of installation and testing of support elements, and instrumentation and monitoring of underground structures is a plus.
- Experience supporting or leading the preparation of technical memoranda, geotechnical design reports, geotechnical baseline reports, drawings, and specifications.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and experience working in a team setting. Experience working in construction is a plus.
- Ability to travel to project sites and the physical ability to freely access all points of a site in wide-ranging climates, environmental conditions, and day and night
- Experience working with AI agents and tools preferred #LI-JP1

Base Compensation: $115,000/yr - $140,000/yr
