Position Overview
Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering is seeking an Early Career Mechanical Engineer for the Lenexa, KS office. We are looking for ideal candidates to grow the Kiewit team by helping establish, maintain, and improve company standards and tools while also utilizing these standards and tools to contribute to project success. You will get experience in mechanical or process engineering, including specific experience with one or more of the following: biogas, bulk solids material handling, water and wastewater treatment, pump stations and pipeline conveyance, groundwater remediation, storm water recycling, process piping, industrial boilers and chillers, or other industrial facilities and equipment.
Candidates shall be familiar with current drawing and technical tools, programs, and software with an understanding of design documentation creation and layouts. Candidates shall be capable of exhibiting flexibility in work assignments while maintaining a growth mindset and continuing to develop in their technical and professional career.

Location
This position is located at our industrial and water hub in Lenexa, KS and may require up to 25% travel on average based on project demands.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the design of various mechanical systems typical for biogas, bulk solids material handling, water and wastewater treatment, pump stations and pipeline conveyance, groundwater remediation, stormwater recycling, and other industrial facilities including, but not limited to, process piping, conveying systems, dust collection, general plant/facility water, compressed air, steam, and gas systems. Mechanical system design includes preparing calculations for both pressurized and gravity driven systems to size lines, material selection, and correct Code requirement application.
- Prepare design calculations and equipment specifications typical for biogas, bulk solids material handling, water and wastewater treatment, pump stations and pipeline conveyance, groundwater remediation, stormwater recycling, and other industrial facilities including, but not limited to, bulk solids conveyors, dust collection equipment, bins/tanks, pumps, heat exchangers, boilers, and other process equipment.
- Review project contracts, customer Requests for Proposals (RFPs), professional service agreements, or other contractual documents and incorporate into the design as required to ensure the project meets or exceeds project goals.
- Perform detailed technical bid analyses for equipment typical for biogas, bulk solids material handling, water and wastewater treatment, pump stations and pipeline conveyance, groundwater remediation, stormwater recycling, and other industrial facilities.
- Generate and check design deliverables such as PFD’s, P&ID’s, datasheets, and vendor shop drawings in accordance with industry codes and standards, contract requirements, and company standards.
- Support the construction team including representing the design team on-site, answering RFI’s, providing creative design solutions, etc.
- Coordinate with other design partners (both internal and external) including construction partners, equipment suppliers, and other engineers and designers assigned to the project or task and review work progress and results.
- Assist in developing schedules, work assignments, and staffing requirements to ensure successful project completion.
- Perform early project design work such as conceptual studies, process flow diagram development, preliminary equipment sizing and selection, and general facility layout/arrangement.
- Complete miscellaneous tasks to support project or department development.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited four-year university.
- Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
- GPA above 3.0 preferred.
- Proficient in basic computing programs including the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Experience with AFT Fathom or AFT Arrow hydraulic simulation software (or equivalent) is a plus.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
