Position Overview

The Structural Estimating Engineering Department Manager is responsible for leading and developing a team of structural estimating professionals supporting complex industrial, energy, infrastructure, and mission-critical projects. This role is focused on building, managing, and mentoring a high-performing estimating organization while ensuring the successful delivery of accurate, competitive, and technically sound structural estimates.

 

The Department Manager will provide strategic leadership, technical oversight, workload coordination, and personnel development for the structural estimating team. This individual will drive estimating consistency, quality, and execution while collaborating closely with engineering, construction, procurement, business development, and executive leadership teams throughout project pursuit and preconstruction activities.

 

The ideal candidate combines strong structural engineering and estimating expertise with demonstrated leadership experience managing teams, improving processes, and supporting large multidisciplinary pursuits across a variety of project delivery methods including Design-Build, Design-Bid-Build, Progressive Design-Build, EPC, FEED, and other contract models.

Location

This is an in-office position, located in Lenexa, KS. 

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, mentor, and develop a team of structural estimating engineers and estimators.
  • Establish departmental goals, staffing plans, performance expectations, and professional development initiatives for the structural estimating group.
  • Oversee the preparation and coordination of structural estimates for large and complex projects.
  • Manage estimating workloads, resource allocation, and proposal support activities across multiple simultaneous pursuits.
  • Ensure consistency, accuracy, completeness, and quality across all structural estimating deliverables.
  • Provide technical guidance and review of quantity takeoffs, pricing strategies, labor assumptions, and estimate methodologies.
  • Foster collaboration between estimating, engineering, construction, procurement, and project management teams during proposal and preconstruction phases.
  • Lead estimate review meetings, risk assessments, constructability evaluations, and executive estimate presentations.
  • Review and interpret project drawings, plans, specifications, and contract documents to support estimate development and team execution.
  • Develop and implement estimating standards, procedures, tools, and best practices to improve departmental performance and efficiency.
  • Support strategic business initiatives and client engagement efforts related to project pursuits and estimate development.
  • Assist in recruitment, onboarding, retention, and succession planning for the structural estimating department.
  • Provide leadership for estimating activities involving highly regulated and technically complex environments, including Nuclear and DOE/NNSA projects.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a Structural Engineer.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Structural Estimator.
  • Minimum 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience leading technical teams or estimating personnel.
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrated ability to review and understand project drawings, plans, specifications, and related contract documents.
  • Strong understanding of structural systems, construction methodologies, estimating practices, and project execution planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage priorities, and coordinate multidisciplinary efforts.
  • Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience leading estimating teams supporting Design-Build, Design-Bid-Build, Progressive Design-Build, EPC, FEED, and other project delivery models.
  • Experience with Nuclear and/or DOE/NNSA projects.
  • Familiarity with nuclear industry standards, codes, and quality requirements.
  • Experience supporting large-scale industrial, energy, infrastructure, or mission-critical projects.
  • Knowledge of estimating software platforms, quantity takeoff tools, and estimating database development.
