The Kiewit Faculty Partnership Program – Industry Faculty Experience is a strategic partnership initiative that connects faculty with Kiewit construction and engineering teams through hands-on, immersive industry experience. Faculty participants gain real-world insights they can bring back to the classroom, strengthening curriculum relevance and better preparing students for the workforce.
Assignments may take place on a construction site, in a Kiewit office, or in a hybrid setting, and are tailored to align both the educator’s professional development goals and the needs of the Kiewit district.
What to Expect:
This is a paid, immersive, full-time industry experience designed to provide faculty participants with hands-on exposure to Kiewit’s construction and infrastructure operations. The experience lasts approximately 8–12 weeks and offers meaningful engagement on active projects.

Faculty Partners are expected to:
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to learning and professional engagement with Kiewit
- Actively learn from observed practices, processes, and project teams
- Maintain a professional demeanor in all field and office environments
- Reflect critically on their experiences to inform teaching and academic practice
- Develop a defined internship work plan in collaboration with their Kiewit manager, outlining learning objectives and outcomes
- Demonstrate achievement of professional skills and learning objectives throughout the internship
- Translate industry learnings back to their academic institution by incorporating real-world applications into coursework and by helping students better understand professional workforce expectations

Location
This experience is based out of our Lenexa, Kansas office.
Responsibilities
• Field engineering, operation planning, cost control, project scheduling, quantity tracking, material procurement, contract administration, estimating & supervision of field activities
• Performing engineering tasks requiring standard techniques and handling minor problems of a technical nature arising during construction
• Maintaining records as required regarding job progress, costs, material usage, etc.
• Planning and scheduling of job and/or job segments
• Investigating problems and/or reported incidents; identifying and recommending solutions/alternatives as appropriate
• Reviewing plans and specifications to determine material requirements (quantities and qualities), pricing of materials, etc.
• Working with suppliers as required facilitating the handling and expediting delivery of materials
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Current faculty member at an accredited college or university in engineering, construction management, or a closely related discipline
- Demonstrated interest in strengthening industry–academic partnerships
- Desire to integrate real-world engineering and construction practices into academic instruction
- Ability to commit to a temporary, full-time immersive experience for the duration of the internship
- Support and approval from the faculty member’s home institution to participate in the program
- Willingness to work in office and/or field environments, including construction sites, as applicable
Preferred:
- Prior industry experience in engineering, construction, or infrastructure
- Experience teaching upper-level undergraduate or graduate coursework
- Interest in workforce development, applied learning, or experiential education
Other Requirements:
- Regular, reliable attendance
- Work productively and meet deadlines timely
- Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment.
- Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
- Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
