Position Overview

Kiewit Industrial Engineering (K-IND) is seeking a Senior-Level Industrial Ammonia Refrigeration and Utilities Engineer. We are looking for ideal candidates to grow the Kiewit team by helping establish, maintain, and improve company standards and tools while also utilizing these standards and tools to contribute to project success. Candidates shall have a minimum of 10 years of experience in industrial ammonia refrigeration engineering and design, including specific experience with food and beverage, refrigerated warehouses, and other industrial refrigeration systems and equipment. Candidates shall be familiar with current drawing and technical tools, programs, and software with an understanding of design documentation creation and layouts. Candidates shall be capable of exhibiting flexibility in work assignments while maintaining a growth mindset and continuing to develop in their technical and professional career.

Our rapidly growing Industrial Engineering team, which includes process, mechanical, electrical, controls, structural, architectural, geotechnical, and civil disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on EPC and design-build delivery of industrial projects in markets such as Food & Beverage, Mineral Processing, Renewable Fuels, Pulp and Paper, Steel & Aluminum, Industrial Buildings, and Industrial Energy, Water and Utilities. 


This position is located at our industrial hub in Lenexa, KS and may require up to 25% travel on average based on project demands.


•    Design various industrial ammonia refrigeration systems typical for food and beverage, refrigerated warehouse, and other industrial facilities including, but not limited to ammonia systems, process piping systems, and general plant/facility water, compressed air, steam, and gas systems.
•    Prepare design calculations for typical industrial ammonia refrigeration systems including, but not limited to, load calculations, equipment sizing, line sizing, and system design conditions. 
•    Prepare equipment specifications and detailed technical bid analyses for typical industrial ammonia refrigeration equipment and/or subcontractors including, but not limited to, vessels, condensers, air handling units, compressors, evaporators, and pumps.
•    Generate and check design deliverables such as PFD’s, P&ID’s, process simulations, datasheets, and vendor shop drawings in accordance with industry codes and standards, contract requirements, and company standards.
•    Support the construction team including representing the design team on-site, answering RFI’s, providing creative design solutions, etc.
•    Coordinate, communicate, and oversee all aspects of the project’s industrial ammonia refrigeration design with other design partners (both internal and external) including construction partners, equipment suppliers, and other engineers and designers.
•    Provide oversight and coordination of projects, working with the assigned design managers and project managers, to meet project budgets and schedules for all industrial ammonia refrigeration discipline activities.
•    Develop schedules, work assignments, and staffing requirements to ensure successful project completion.
•    Perform early project design work such as conceptual studies, process flow diagram development, mass/energy balances, preliminary equipment sizing and selection, and general facility layout/arrangement.
•    Train, mentor, and advise peers and support staff on proper application of industrial ammonia refrigeration industry standards and best practices.
•    Support the development of industrial HVAC, room conditioning, and zoning outside of the industrial ammonia refrigeration system.
•    Serve as the company subject matter expert for industrial refrigeration applications and implementation.


•    Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or chemical engineering or equivalent engineering program from an ABET accredited four-year university.
•    Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferred
•    A minimum of 10 years of industry related engineering experience
•    Proficient in basic computing programs including the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
•    Understand R717 – Industrial Ammonia Refrigeration Systems, as well as cascade systems and closed loop CO2 systems.
•    Familiarity with Packaged Industrial Unit solutions and their application.
•    Knowledge of process safety including PSM, PHA, MOC and other permits work on industrial ammonia refrigeration systems.
•    Understand the process interlocks and parameters when industrial ammonia refrigeration systems are used for process cooling.
