Position Overview

GIS Engineering Interns utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) to perform detailed activities on assigned projects. The GIS Engineering Intern supports members of the team, helping to create and edit data to be used by project teams across the company.

Kiewit Power Engineering (KPE) includes Geospatial Services group, part of Kiewit’s Engineering & Consulting Services based in Lenexa, KS, USA.  Our Engineering & Consulting Services group (ECS) is responsible for a variety of different markets, including our renewables markets (Solar, Wind, Battery Storage), Carbon Capture market, Geospatial Services, EV Charging, and other generation services projects. Selected candidates will be part of our rapidly growing Engineering team that is responsible for execution of all the markets detailed above.  The Geospatial Services group supports markets and projects within and outside of Kiewit. 

Location

This position is based out of our Lenexa, KS office.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret aerial/satellite imagery  
  • Work with data in various formats, digitizing data from various sources  
  • Creates, updates, and maintains GIS data within databases, feature classes, or SHP files  
  • Understands basic GIS environment and file formats. 
  • Uses knowledge and best judgement to work independently while asking questions when needed. 
  • Communicates assignment progression updates and/or issues to project supervisors.  
  • Shows continued and progressive professional development 
  • Demonstrates a client focus and work to help our clients be successful  

Qualifications

  • Pursuing an Associates or Bachelors degree in GIS, geography, or related field
  • Knowledge of GIS Software (ArcGIS Pro, QGIS) 
  • Working knowledge of data formats and databases helpful 
  • Excellent communication skills, team player, detail oriented, motivated  
  • Must be able to communicate through email and utilize electronic meeting requests 
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office knowledge  
  • Ability to manage assigned tasks by staying focused and managing priorities
