Position Overview
Kiewit is seeking a strategic and experienced District Communications Leader to develop, lead, and execute a comprehensive communications strategy for our Industrial & Water Engineering (KIWE) business. The District Communications Leader will serve as the primary communications advisor to district leadership, helping shape how information is delivered, understood, and acted upon across the organization. While strong writing and creative capabilities are essential, this position is first and foremost a strategic communications role focused on planning, alignment, engagement, and organizational effectiveness.
The successful candidate will build communication frameworks, drive consistency in messaging, advise leaders on communication approaches, and create impactful communications that strengthen employee engagement, support business initiatives, and enhance organizational culture.
District Overview
Kiewit Engineering Group, Inc is a full-service engineering consulting and design firm serving a broad range of industrial markets. Our rapidly growing Industrial and Water Engineering team, which includes process, mechanical, electrical, controls, structural, architectural, geotechnical, and civil disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on EPC (Engineer Procure Construct) and design-build delivery of industrial projects in markets such as Food & Beverage, Mineral Processing, Renewable Fuels, Pulp and Paper, Steel & Aluminum, Industrial Buildings, and Industrial Energy, Water and Utilities.

This role will be based out of Lenexa, Kansas office.
Responsibilities
Strategic Communications Leadership
- Develop and own the district-wide communications strategy aligned with business objectives and leadership priorities.
- Partner with district leadership to identify communication needs, opportunities, risks, and key messaging priorities.
- Create annual and quarterly communication plans that support organizational goals, operational changes, growth initiatives, and employee engagement efforts.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders on communication strategy, messaging, and change management.
Executive & Leadership Communications
- Draft and manage executive communications, leadership announcements, organizational updates, and strategic messaging.
- Develop communication materials for town halls, leadership meetings, business updates, and employee forums.
- Ensure leaders are equipped with clear, consistent messaging that drives understanding and alignment across the organization.
- Translate complex business topics into clear, compelling communications for diverse audiences.
Internal Communications & Employee Engagement
- Lead district-wide internal communication efforts across multiple channels.
- Create and manage employee communication campaigns that support key business initiatives, culture, safety, recognition, people development, and organizational changes.
- Develop communication tools and resources that improve information flow and employee engagement.
- Measure communication effectiveness and continuously improve communication approaches based on feedback and business needs.
Content Development & Storytelling
- Write and edit high-impact communications including leadership memos, organizational announcements, newsletters, success stories, presentations, and strategic updates.
- Identify and tell compelling stories that showcase employee achievements, project accomplishments, innovation, and organizational culture.
- Ensure all communications reflect Kiewit's values, voice, and brand standards.
- Collaborate with business leaders and subject matter experts to gather information and develop engaging content.
Stakeholder Partnership
- Build strong relationships with district leadership, HR, recruiting, operations, project teams, and corporate communications.
- Coordinate messaging across functions to ensure alignment and consistency.
- Support special initiatives, strategic projects, and organizational transformations through effective communication planning and execution.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Organizational Communication, Business, or related field.
- 7+ years of progressive communications experience with demonstrated success developing and executing strategic communication plans.
- Experience advising senior leaders and influencing communication strategy at an organizational level.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Strong executive presence with the ability to build credibility and influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Experience managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven ability to translate complex business information into concise, engaging communications.
Preferred
- Experience supporting engineering, construction, industrial, energy, or professional services organizations.
- Background in change management and organizational communications.
- Experience developing executive presentations and leadership messaging.
- Familiarity with employee engagement strategies and internal communication platforms.
- Experience working in matrixed organizations with geographically dispersed teams.
