Position Overview

The Chief Piping Engineer serves as the technical authority for all piping-related engineering across Kiewit Engineering Group. This role provides leadership and governance over piping system design, including pipe stress, materials, supports, specifications, and overall system integrity. The Chief Piping Engineer ensures consistency, quality, and technical excellence across all markets and projects while driving standards, innovation, and best practices within the discipline.

District Overview

Kiewit Power Engineers brings various project types to life across North America, including gas-fired generation, power delivery, environmental retrofits, renewables and new technology, and water/wastewater. Our staff leads the power markets engineering process and collaborates with Kiewit's construction teams to focus on safe, cost-effective and innovative designs that achieve client expectations and further Kiewit's legacy of excellence.

Location

This role will be onsite, located out of our Lenexa, KS office.

Responsibilities

1. Provide technical leadership and expertise across the piping discipline.
· Serve as the subject matter expert for piping stress, materials, supports, and system design.
· Act as the primary technical authority for complex and high-risk piping issues.
· Interpret and apply applicable industry codes and standards including ASME B31.1, B31.3, and B31.8.
· Provide guidance on system behavior, operability, constructability, and failure modes.

2. Provide oversight of piping standards, specifications, and design practices.
· Own and maintain piping specifications for process and utility services.
· Serve as the master coordinator for piping codes and specifications.
· Ensure consistency in piping design across projects, districts, and markets.
· Lead development and continuous improvement of tools, workflows, and best practices.

3. Provide design oversight and quality assurance for piping systems.
· Oversee design of pipes, fittings, valves, and special items.
· Review stress analysis models, boundary conditions, and support design.
· Support department-level quality control and ensure compliance with standards.
· Resolve complex technical challenges including thermal expansion, equipment loads, and material selection.
· Act as escalation point for field and fabrication issues.

4. Provide support for procurement, fabrication, and construction.
· Provide input on selection and procurement of piping components.
· Support vendor evaluation and technical alignment.
· Assist with pipe shop fabrication and field installation considerations.
· Provide expertise in welding methods and post-weld heat treatment.
· Support resolution of field issues and capture lessons learned.

5. Provide leadership in tools, software, and innovation.
· Maintain awareness of piping analysis and design software.
· Support implementation and effective use of tools across the organization.
· Drive innovation in piping engineering methods and workflows.

6. Provide cross-functional leadership and communication.
· Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure integrated system design.
· Mentor and develop piping engineers.
· Communicate technical issues effectively across all levels of the organization.

Qualifications

· Demonstrated expertise across piping, stress, materials, and supports.
· Strong knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards.
· Strong analytical ability and capacity to interpret technical data and make recommendations.
· Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and active listening skills.
· Track record of establishing processes, standards, and effective tools to guide design efforts.
· Action-oriented, results-driven, and self-motivated with strong commitment to quality.

Technical Skills

· Advanced working knowledge of ASME B31.1 and B31.3; familiarity with B31.8 preferred.
· Expertise in piping materials and ASTM specifications.
· Strong understanding of piping stress analysis principles and tools.
· Expertise in welding technologies and application preferred.

Education/Experience

· Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
· Minimum 15+ years of relevant piping engineering experience.
· Professional Engineering (PE) license.
· Experience across power, water, oil & gas, and industrial markets preferred.
· ASME Code committee experience preferred.

Working Conditions

Fast-paced office environment; must be able to interact professionally with all levels of management whilesimultaneously managing a diversified workload and challenging situations efficiently and effectively; regularly sit, stand, walk and talk and listen; occasionally lift and move up objects up to 30 pounds. 
Travel in the U.S. and internationally (5-15%).
