Position Overview

Kiewit is seeking an Architect specialized in Data Center design to join our Industrial Buildings Group. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a top 10 construction and engineering firm, contributing to multi-million-dollar projects across Power, Industrial, Oil & Gas, Water, and Transit sectors.

As a key member of our architectural team, you will lead the design and coordination of Mission-Critical Data Center facilities, ensuring high-performance, scalable, and secure environments. You’ll work closely with engineers and contractors to deliver innovative, cost-effective solutions from concept through construction.

District Overview

The Industrial Buildings Group is a diverse group of architects and engineers, as a part of Kiewit Engineering, Inc., and is responsible for all phases of the project life cycle for all buildings within Kiewit projects. The architect is responsible for managing fast paced projects including coordination and collaboration with in-house project engineers and contractors for successful execution of building estimates, conceptual design, construction documents and construction administration.

Location

This position is based in our Lenexa, KS office.

Responsibilities

  • Lead architectural design for Data Center buildings, ensuring compliance with industry standards, client requirements, and Kiewit’s quality benchmarks.
  • Perform life safety and code analysis, including coordination with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, security, and telecommunications to deliver integrated building designs. Provide technical guidance during estimating, bidding, and construction phases.
  • Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, and design deliverables.
  • Conduct constructability reviews and 3D model coordination for interference checks.
  • Support construction administration, including RFIs, submittals, and field visits.
  • Mentor junior architectural staff and contribute to team development.
  • Apply knowledge of EPC and Design-Build workflows to optimize project execution.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Masters degree in Architecture from a NAAB accredited program.
  • Minimum 7 years of architectural experience, with a strong portfolio of Data Center projects.
  • NCARB Certification required; active architectural license preferred.
  • Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD Architecture, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with all phases of building design, from concept through construction.
  • Familiarity with specification writing and value engineering.
  • Understanding of pre-engineered metal buildings is a plus.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of sustainability standards (e.g. LEED for Data Centers) and ability to integrate sustainable design practices such as energy-efficient cooling systems, renewable energy sources, and LEED certification to meet environmental regulations and client goals.
  • Experience with integrating Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) into data center designs. #LI-KS23
