Position Overview
Kiewit has an immediate opening for a Senior Mechanical Engineer in its Hydropower, Dams, and Hydraulic Structures (HDH) team. The ideal candidate will have experience in the design and construction of dams, hydropower facilities, and other hydraulic structures and will work closely with the HDH Department Director and other members of the leadership team to deliver projects as well as grow and manage the operational needs of the HDH Department. The successful candidate will bring energy, enthusiasm, and a focus on collaboration while providing technical, quality, administrative, and safety leadership for the engineers and designers of the department.
The duties of the Hydropower and Dams Sr Mechanical Engineer will be twofold. One aspect of the work will consist in working with a multidisciplinary team that includes civil, structural, geotechnical, hydrology & hydraulics, environmental, and electrical engineers, as well as estimators, schedulers, and other construction professionals to win and successfully deliver projects. The other aspect of the work will be to support the operations of the Hydropower and Dams team, by contributing to business development, as well as the development and the operationalization of the business strategy in support of the Department Director.

Location
This position will be based in one of Kiewit’s major centers across Canada (Laval, QC; Oakville, ON; Burnaby, BC) and will require occasional travel to project sites and other offices as needed.
Responsibilities
People/Organization
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships with internal (construction and procurement personnel as well as other design engineering departments) and external (consulting engineering firms, equipment suppliers, clients) stakeholders.
- Fostering an environment that emphasizes collaboration and coordination; providing feedback and encouraging learning to create growth opportunities.
- Coordinating and continually monitoring staff assignments and staff workloads.
- Assisting the Department Director in development and implementing the business development strategy and business plan for the department.
- Identifying, staffing, developing, and aligning high performance teams and individuals to meet organizational goals.
- Support in the identification and implementation of AI solutions to increase the efficiency of our design operations.
Projects/Technical
- Act as a mechanical Subject Matter Expert on select projects.
- Act as a design coordinator/deputy design manager on select projects.
- Support the building and management of design teams, comprised of internal and external (consulting engineering design partners), on select projects
- Ensuring designs are completed with consistent application of design standards, technical approaches, and in accordance with the design quality management program.
- Advising and providing direction to staff on proper execution of complex and advanced deliverables; potentially serving as engineer of record with responsibility for design recommendations and deliverables associated with advanced design components.
- Support project teams in the resolution of technical issues, e.g. non-conformities, technical claims, etc.
- Working with pursuit teams to identify key technical risks and develop plans to mitigate those risks.
- Leading the exploration of alternate designs or new technologies to challenge the status quo and provoke exploration of new or innovative design solutions.
- Coordinating with the Engineering Project Execution team to ensure on-time and on-budget project delivery.
- Collaborating with staff and the Engineering Project Management Team to develop work scopes and labor estimates.
- Interface with Clients, Construction Personnel, Subconsultants and Regulatory Agencies.
Quality and Safety
- Leading by example with respect to safety, quality, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Coordinating with the quality management team to train staff and implement the design quality management program.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 15 years of experience as a design engineer.
- Experience in hydropower and dam projects, specifically in the design of either:
- Heavy mechanical equipment (gates, hoists, traveling bridge cranes, stop logs, trash racks, trash cleaning machines, etc.);
- Auxiliary mechanical systems (HVAC, piping, compressed air, etc.);
- Turbine and generator equipment.
- Minimum 3 years of experience managing multidisciplinary engineering project teams as design manager, deputy design manager, project engineer, or design coordinator.
- Experience in supporting Business Development will be considered an asset, including demonstrated engagement in in organizations such as Waterpower Canada, OWA, CDA, USSD, NHA, CEATI, etc.
- Experience in managing a discipline or team will be considered an asset.
- Experience with project delivery models that include working directly with the contractor (Design-Build, EPC, Progressive Design-Build, Turn-key, I2PD, etc.), preferred.
- Professional engineering registration in one or more Canadian province, required.
- Professional engineering registration in the province of Qc will be considered a strong asset.
- Holistic understanding of hydropower and dam projects, beyond the mechanical engineering expertise of the candidate, will be considered a strong asset.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Autonomy, initiative, ability to work independently and prioritize will be highly considered.
- Strong interpersonal skills resulting in great rapport with people. Proven success in initiating, promoting, and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships amongst a team.
- Fluent in English (written and spoken). French fluency will be considered a strong asset.
- This position requires travel to project offices and work sites. Ability to travel based on business needs and requirements.

Base Compensation: $170,000/yr - $210,000/yr
