Position Overview

The Project Welding Manager plays a pivotal role in overseeing and enhancing welding operations across large-scale power and industrial construction projects throughout the southern United States. This leadership position entails managing all aspects of welding quality assurance and program delivery, ensuring compliance with stringent industry standards and client specifications. The role requires an innovative leader who fosters technical excellence, promotes a safety-first culture, and drives continuous improvements in welding processes. Successfully coordinating diverse teams and integrating advanced welding technologies and quality systems will be key to meeting project objectives and client expectations.

District Overview

Kiewit’s Quality Group is a shared service that maintains and executes quality standards on projects across the company. Our principal quality objectives are to meet or exceed clients’ expectations and to eliminate rework by performing our work “right the first time.” We monitor our performance against these objectives and require continual improvement. 

Location

This position is based on site at project locations across the Southern United States, including Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Candidates should be prepared for frequent travel and extended stays as needed to effectively manage welding operations and collaborate directly with on-site project teams and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and oversee comprehensive welding quality programs tailored to the demands of multiple project sites while ensuring strict adherence to corporate policies and client requirements.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor multi-disciplinary welding teams, including inspectors, foremen, and field welders, to enhance technical skills and foster a culture of accountability and excellence.
  • Manage the qualification and certification process of welders, encompassing practical training, rigorous testing, and meticulous documentation.
  • Coordinate welding schedules and resources to meet tight project timelines and budget constraints without compromising quality or safety standards.
  • Ensure full compliance with applicable codes, standards (including ASME, AWS, and API), and governmental regulations through continuous monitoring and audits.
  • Conduct systematic inspections and quality assessments of welding procedures, equipment, and documentation to identify opportunities for process optimization.
  • Collaborate closely with project management, engineering, procurement, and quality assurance teams to resolve welding-related technical challenges promptly and efficiently.
  • Oversee the selection, maintenance, and calibration of welding equipment and consumables, ensuring optimal functionality and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Develop and maintain critical documentation such as Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualification Records (WPQ).
  • Lead root cause investigations and implement corrective measures for any welding-related nonconformances to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide expert technical guidance and support to project teams, clients, and subcontractors, reinforcing best practices and industry standards.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports detailing welding quality metrics, program effectiveness, and compliance status for stakeholder review.
  • Champion workplace safety, quality assurance, and ongoing process improvement initiatives within the welding organization.
  • Drive the adoption and integration of advanced digital quality management systems and innovative welding technologies to enhance operational efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Possession of Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification or equivalent is mandatory; advanced certifications such as Senior CWI or NDT Level II/III are highly desirable.
  • Minimum of eight years’ progressive experience in welding quality management, preferably within power generation or industrial construction sectors.
  • Proven expertise in the development, implementation, and management of welding quality programs across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks including ASME, AWS, API, and industry best practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a related discipline is preferred, underscoring a strong technical foundation.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities with excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills conducive to managing multidisciplinary teams effectively.
  • Proficiency with digital quality management software and familiarity with welding documentation systems to ensure accurate data capture and reporting.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout the Southern US to support project needs and provide on-site leadership.
  • Experience in managing large-scale EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects is advantageous.
  • Exceptional ability to prioritize competing demands, adapt to evolving project requirements, and maintain focus on critical quality and safety objectives.
