Position Overview
As a Safety Specialist 2 at Kiewit, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of all personnel on a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) project. You will serve as the Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO), responsible for implementing and managing the Site-Specific Safety Plan, maintaining compliance with EM 385-1-1 and OSHA standards, and fostering a culture of safety excellence.
District Overview
Kiewit's Southeast District specializes in heavy civil, transportation and water resource markets, and has played a significant role in building infrastructure throughout the fast-growing southeastern United States. Since the 1970s, we have built projects from Maryland to Florida and west to Louisiana. Our operations include highways, airports, mass transit, tunnels, water and wastewater facilities, dams and infrastructure work.

Responsibilities
- Serve as the SSHO for the project, ensuring full compliance with USACE safety requirements.
- Implement and oversee the Site-Specific Safety Plan (SSSP).
- Conduct daily safety inspections and audits.
- Maintain accurate safety documentation, including incident reports, training records, and hazard analyses.
- Lead safety meetings and toolbox talks.
- Coordinate with project leadership, subcontractors, and field crews to ensure safe work practices.
- Interface with regulatory agencies (OSHA, USACE) as needed.
- Stop work when unsafe conditions are identified and lead corrective actions.
Qualifications
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification (required).
- Minimum 24 hours of formal safety training within the last 3 years (e.g., EM 385-1-1, First Aid/CPR, Fall Protection).
- At least 5 years of cumulative safety experience within the last 10 years managing projects of similar size and scope, or at least 3 years of experience if the candidate holds a safety-related degree requiring at least 3 years to obtain.
- Strong working knowledge of EM 385-1-1, OSHA standards, and federal safety regulations.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, field-based environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, or related field.
- Certifications such as CHST, CSP, or ASP.
- Prior experience on USACE or NAVFAC projects.
