Position Overview

The Senior Welding Engineer is responsible for managing the welding and welding associated activties for the district. Based in the district office, the Senior Welding Engineer plays a critical role in supporting district operations and project execution through the implementation of welding programs, technologies, and quality controls.

Kiewit Energy Canada is a major industrial contractor that specializes a wide range of engineering, procurement and construction services to the oil, gas, chemical, ethanol and related process industries. Our projects involve construction of oil sands processing facilities, including steam-assisted gravity drainage facilities, refinery expansions, gas plant expansions, co-generation facilities, major mine developments and pipe spool fabrication.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and maintaining district-specific welding procedures in compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Managing welder qualification and continuity programs to ensure workforce readiness and compliance.
  • Witnessing all welder qualification testing conducted within the district to verify compliance and maintain quality standards.
  • Providing training and technical support for field weld tracking systems and software.
  • Offering guidance and oversight, as required, for pre- and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) operations.
  • Reviewing and approving subcontractor welding procedures to ensure alignment with project and regulatory requirements.
  • Delivering training to district and project personnel on general and project-specific welding procedures, including the development of Weld Matrices.
  • Overseeing the certification and renewal processes for ASME, ABSA, CWB, TSBC, and TSASK quality programs, including updates to associated quality manuals.
  • Coordinating the procurement of materials for welder testing and leading the implementation of welding program software.
  • Supporting the estimating process by providing technical input on welding scope, productivity factors, resource planning, and material take-offs to ensure accurate and competitive project bids.

Qualifications

  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with active membership in APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta).
  • Demonstrated self-starter with strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Broad working knowledge of:
    • Welding processes and materials
    • Metallurgy and heat treatment (pre- and post-weld)
    • Special processes, inspection, and testing techniques
  • Solid understanding of construction industry welding practices and relevant codes and standards, including but not limited to:
    • AWS, ASME, API, NBIC, AISC, ASNT, NRC
  • Certifications from recognized bodies such as AWS, CWB, ASNT, API, etc., are considered advantageous. #LI-GH
