Position Overview

The Director / Vice President, Kiewit Development Company (KDC) will be located in Detroit, Michigan. The individual will be part of a geographically dispersed team with staff locations across North America and will work on all aspects of asset management for KDC’s projects. The role will support KDC’s asset management team by providing both commercial and technical expertise to KDC projects that are in construction or operations.

Kiewit Development is the development, investment and asset management arm of Kiewit. Formed in 2009, Kiewit Development supports Kiewit’s design and construction activities with a dedicated team of project management, development, investment, finance and asset management professionals located across North America. 


We develop projects across North America in all markets and business segments in which Kiewit participates. We work closely with public and private clients to understand their needs and constraints and deliver comprehensive solutions that meet those needs. We support projects from start to finish with in-house expertise in areas including: market development, teaming, proposals, legal and commercial, financial and technical. In addition, we oversee the delivery of our assets during construction, commissioning and operations. 
 

Location

Position is located in Detroit and will require travel across the United States and Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the project company in communications with the client, the Design-Builder, and the Operator  
  • Act as the point of contact or the alternate point of contact under the Project Agreement with the client
  • Ensure Project Agreement obligations are being satisfied 
  • Manage Project Company Reporting which includes the preparation, review, and presentation of reporting materials including but not limited to:
    • Client required reporting, notices and compliance with document sharing
    • Project Company Board materials
    • Internal KDC, and Kiewit management materials
    • Lender required materials 
    • Notices to Design-Builder and Operator as required 
  • Attend, and lead or support, all required project meetings
  • Identify, monitor, and manage project risks
  • Oversee the Design-Build and Operator contractors in the fulfillment of their respective obligations including:
    • Monitor and evaluate design and construction status of the project and escalate problems or issues appropriately to KDC management and the Board of Directors
    • Monitor the construction and operations deliverables by the respective contractor to ensure compliance with the technical requirements 
    • Review and approve the Design Builder and Operator’s monthly invoices 
    • Oversee, if applicable, the quality management system for the Design-Builder and Operator
    • Review Design-Builder and Operator plans include health and safety, quality, MBE engagement etc. 
    • Ensure any non-compliance is rectified accordingly, and provide relevant notices as required
    • Plan and manage lifecycle budgets and expenditures, and where the Project company has retained lifecycle obligations update the lifecycle and rehabilitation program for the project assets
  • Change management and dispute resolution
    • Participate in the design review process
    • Manage Change Order process
    • Manage any claims and/or operational/construction issues; coordinate discussions regarding same with the Client, contractor and operator as required
    • Advise on contractual and commercial positions of the Parties in case of potential issues or disputes with regards to technical and commercial matters and work to resolve issues 
  • Coordinate with other project team members including where applicable the finance manager, the communications manager, technical manager home-off accounting tax, and legal staff, etc. 

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in business or engineering
  • 10 years experience, with 5+ in relevant role providing technical and commercial oversight working in the U.S. infrastructure, building, transportation or industrial sector(s) is required
  • Experience with projects financed using project finance considered beneficial but not critical
  • Ability to review and interpret complex legal and financial agreements and summarize key issues
  • Experience presenting materials to project or company board of directors
  • Board membership considered beneficial but not critical
  • Ability to travel freely between Canada and the United States
  • Assessing and managing risk on complex construction projects
  • Capacity to understand and adapt to complex technical and contractual situations

 

ADDITIONAL SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong written and spoken communications skills
  • Demonstrated history of working as part of a team, as well as managing other team members
  • Experience managing complex technical issues such as claims, change orders, contract changes , etc. to successful resolution
  • Work as an owner’s representative or owner’s engineer considered relevant
  • Quality Management experience
  • Experience with Public Private Partnerships
